French Open 2017: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal Qualify for Quarter-Finals

Gianni VerschuerenJun 4, 2017

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal needed just three sets apiece to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2017 French Open on Sunday, while defending women's champion Garbine Muguruza lost to Kristina Mladenovic.

Djokovic worked his way past Albert Ramos-Vinolas, while Nadal blitzed Roberto Bautista Agut. Dominic Thiem also booked his spot in the next round, and Venus Williams lost to Timea Bacsinszky in three sets.

Djokovic, Nadal Roll

Djokovic recovered from a false start to get past Ramos-Vinolas, who shocked the crowds in Paris with aggressive tennis and an early break. The Spaniard kept things close later in the first set and had his chances to grab the advantage, but in the tie break, the Serb won out.

The second set wasn't nearly as close, and while Ramos-Vinolas flashed his talent in the third, the Djoker was never really troubled again. Per Jose Morgado of Record, Djokovic impressed more Sunday than he has at any other stage of the tournament:

Nadal continued his absurd pace with another impressive win, downing compatriot Bautista Agut. The latter won just five games over the course of three sets, and per Bet365, that result was in keeping with Nadal's run through the tournament:

The 31-year-old is chasing his 10th French Open title, and given his remarkable form, it's hard to see which player could possibly stop him.

Thiem was just as impressive Sunday, beating Argentina's Horacio Zeballos in three sets. Like Nadal, the Austrian lost just five games, preserving precious energy in the process.

Milos Raonic's tournament came to and end against Pablo Carreno Busta, who survived a five-set thriller, and Kei Nishikori recovered from his struggles Saturday to see off Hyeon Chung. Their match had been postponed because of rain at a time the Japanese star was laboring, but he came out much stronger Sunday.

Crowd Helps Mladenovic Oust Muguruza

In the women's draw, defending champion Muguruza lost in three sets against local favourite Mladenovic, but the result didn't come without controversy. While the French crowd was expected to support their countrywoman, they took it way too far, and Mladenovic openly asked for more.

As shared by Tennis Now's Chris Oddo, Muguruza was far from satisfied after her loss:

She had to momentarily pause her press conference after the loss, as she broke down in tears. Tennis writer Carole Bouchard felt for the Spanish star:

With Williams also dropping out of the tournament with her loss to Bacsinszky, there are no more Grand Slam winners left on the women's side.
