MLB Posts Record Number of Single-Day Grand Slams Saturday
Seven different major league hitters slugged a home run with the bases loaded Saturday, marking the most grand slams on a single day in MLB history, per Elias Sports Bureau (h/t ESPN Stats & Info).
Seattle Mariners catcher Mike Zunino finished off the historic day with the seventh grand slam, but his was overshadowed by Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols' shot. Pujols needed just one home run to reach 600 for his career and did so in the fourth inning off Minnesota Twins pitcher Ervin Santana, becoming the ninth member of the club, per MLB Stat of the Day.

The players included in the slugfest were Zunino, Pujols, the Chicago Cubs' Kyle Schwarber, Atlanta Braves' Matt Adams, Colorado Rockies' Ian Desmond, Milwaukee Brewers' Travis Shaw and Los Angeles Dodgers' Chris Taylor. The previous record for most in a day was set on May 21, 2000, at six, per MLB.com's David Adler. Of the players to go deep on that day, Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre remains the only active player.
The league as a whole has averaged 1.23 home runs per game so far this season, which would represent a single-season best average should it extend over the course of the season, per Baseball Reference. The previous record was set in 2000 during the middle of the performance-enhancing drug era of baseball.
