Sunday Recap

PARIS, FRANCE - JUNE 04: A general view inside Court Suzanne Lenglen during the mens singles fourth round match between Rafael Nadal of Spain and Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain on day eight of the 2017 French Open at Roland Garros on June 4, 2017 in Pari

It's been a while since Roland Garros regulars witnessed Nadal at the absolute peak of his powers; there have been times since his last win at the French Open, in 2014, when many would have wondered if he would have ever reached those heights again.

But in 2017, the 31-year-old has bossed all four of his matches on the way to the quarter-finals, with compatriot Bautista Agut the latest to feel the wrath of the nine-time champion.

It was clear early on in this contest that Nadal had the measure of his opponent's serve. From that point on, another straight-sets win was inevitable.

Per Stuart Fraser of the Times, the Spaniard is in one of the most dominant grooves of his career:

Earlier in the day, Kei Nishikori avoided an upset in his rain-interrupted match, as he eventually overcame Chung Hyeon in five sets.

The Japanese was far from his best in Paris, as Hyeon set up a deciding set with a bagel in the fourth set. Still, the eighth seed was able to find his rhythm in the fifth stanza, as he so often does in Grand Slam clashes, per the Gracenote Olympic feed:

In the women's bracket, Pliskova sent out a message in her Round 3 win over Witthoft.

The second seed needed to battle in the early stages of the match against the determined German, although as the first stanza wore on, Pliskova started to get more joy. A late break saw her take the set.

From that point, there was only going to be one winner, as Pliskova started to express herself. A 6-1 win in the second set was testament to her eventual dominance. As noted by the WTA Insider Twitter feed, the Czech looks much more at home on the Grand Slam stage:

Elsewhere in the women's draw, Svitolina continued her march towards a first Grand Slam title, edging out Poland's Linette in two evenly matched sets of tennis.

Svitolina arrived at Roland Garros in fine form, having won the Italian Open, and has looked in excellent shape at the tournament so far. Per the Live Tennis Twitter account, the 22-year-old is growing in confidence on this surface:

There is another wonderful story emerging in the women's draw, as Petra Martic upset 17th seed Anastasija Sevastova.

Martic came through the qualifiers to take her place in the main draw at Roland Garros and, as reported by sports journalist Jon Wertheim, was ranked down in 659th in April this year. Yet she was by far the stronger player in this outing, surging into the last 16 with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
