French Open 2017: Andy Murray, Marin Cilic Advance to 4th Round
Andy Murray qualified for the fourth round of the 2017 French Open after Saturday's 7-6(8), 7-5, 6-0 victory over Juan Martin del Potro saw the world No. 1 encounter the toughest test of his campaign to date.
Murray will face either John Isner or Russian Karen Khachanov in the next round at Roland Garros, but he'll have to wait another day to learn his opponent, as the Saturday evening match was cancelled due to heavy rain late on, per Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times.
One player already joining Murray in Round 4 is 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss player beat Fabio Fognini in straight sets, 7-6(7), 6-0, 6-2.
Earlier on Saturday, No. 7 seed Marin Cilic advanced following a routine 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 win over Feliciano Lopez, and Murray's British compatriot Kyle Edmund fell out at the hands of Kevin Anderson.
Elena Vesnina was dumped out of the women's singles after she lost in straight sets to Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-4, and French favourite Alize Cornet beat Agnieszka Radwanska out of the competition with a 6-2, 6-1 hammering.

Recap
Murray didn't get off to the best of starts in his battle against Del Potro and trailed 5-3 in the first set before a three-game barrage saw the Scot wrest the match lead for the first time in what proved to be a turning point.
It was after that point his best began to bubble to the surface, and after Del Potro's errors caused another near-miss in the second set, Murray really started to peak toward the end of the match, via Eurosport UK:
On another day, Murray might have found Del Potro had the fortitude to win the first two sets—both of which were extremely tight at times—but the top seed will only be concerned with his next meeting at Roland Garros.
Murray showed his credentials as a potential winner on the same day Wawrinka did the same. He survived a first-set tiebreak before taking control in the second.
Wawrinka was near-flawless as he dropped only two more games the rest of the way. In the process, the Swiss kept up a prolific winning run to overwhelm Fognini, per ATP Media Info:
In this sort of form, Wawrinka is going to take some stopping at Roland Garros this year.
Sadly, the onset of persistent rain brought about the end of play. The tournament's official Twitter account featured a snap of the wet conditions:
At the time, Gael Monfils was closing in on winning the first set against Richard Gasquet. Typically, the mercurial Monfils was treating the crowd to some trademark spectacular shots:
Monfils and Gasquet weren't the only players interrupted by the weather. Isner and Khachanov's game was suspended with the latter one set up, while Kei Nishikori got a reprieve after being pushed into a fourth set.
Murray's potential semi-final opponent, Cilic, moved into the fourth round earlier on Saturday, and his 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Lopez provided the Croat with a significant career milestone:
Cilic is yet to surrender a set at Roland Garros this year and has failed to lose more than three games in any set played, which serves as an indication as to the kind of form he's enjoying as he seeks glory in Paris.
Two-time French Open quarter-finalist Suarez Navarro is one match away from making it to that stage for a third time in her career, having beaten Vesnina 6-4, 6-4 to advance another impressive tally of hers, per tennis writer Jose Morgado:
She'll face No. 3 seed Simona Halep in the fourth round after the Romanian beat Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5 on Saturday in what was at times a very one-sided battle.
Her performance was far superior to that of Radwanska, who bowed out of the competition due to a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at Cornet's hands, a result that lowered tennis writer Tumaini Carayol's opinion of the Pole:
While Radwanska was far from at her best, however, Cornet's display warranted advancement in the competition, although her fourth-round foe, Caroline Garcia, may not be as accommodating.
Garcia beat Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 4-6, 9-7 after surviving a mid-match lull in performance, setting the stage for two of France's title hopefuls to meet in a showdown to decide who progresses to the last eight.
Murray issued a statement of intent with his performance, but he would be smart to be wary of Wawrinka moving forward.
