Andy Murray booked his place in the fourth round of the 2017 French Open on Saturday after beating Juan Martin del Potro 7-6(8), 7-5, 6-0 on Philippe-Chatrier Court.

The Scot was placed under early pressure but fought back to gain a foothold and eventually dominate the fixture in what was a demanding test of his credentials to become Roland Garros champion.

Marin Cilic progressed to the fourth round with a dominant 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 win over Feliciano Lopez, but Kyle Edmund won't join Murray in the fourth round after he exited at the hands of Kevin Anderson.

Recap

Murray remains on course for a maiden title at Roland Garros after beating Del Potro in straight sets to set up a fourth-round meeting opposite either John Isner of Karen Khachanov.

It was far from pretty—particularly early on—but Murray proved his stamina to once again be key en route to an impressive win against Del Potro, a victory rightly hailed by tennis writer Jose Morgado as one of special significance:

Also in the top half of the men's bracket, Cilic stormed his way into the fourth round thanks to a conclusive win over Lopez, who dropped his serve seven times over the course of three sets before confirming his departure.

Cilic is merely carrying on the dominant trend that's been evident in his play of late, however, as noted by tennis writer Rene Denfeld:

Edmund and Anderson engaged in a tense war for the right to take a berth in the fourth round, but it was the latter who proved his credentials, lasting longer than his British foe to clinch a 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win.

Elsewhere, a confident performance from Cornet saw the home pick overturn Radwanska in sensational fashion, although Morgado of Portuguese daily Record put the result more down to the Pole's failings:

Cornet will face compatriot and No. 28 seed Caroline Garcia in the next round after she defeated Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 4-6, 9-7, meaning at least one of France's Roland Garros hopefuls will leave the tournament on Sunday.

Meanwhile, third seed Simona Halep eased her way into the fourth round with a 6-0, 7-5 win against Daria Kasatkina, and she'll face Suarez Navarro in the fourth round following her straight-sets victory over Vesnina.
