WWE SmackDown: Potential Spoilers, Rumors, News and Preview for May 30

Ryan DilbertMay 30, 2017

The chase for the women's title will take center stage on the final WWE SmackDown in May.

Every Superstar in the women's division believes they deserve the next crack at Naomi's championship. Carmella has pinned the champ in recent non-title matches. Charlotte Flair's last title match came apart at the seams thanks to The Welcoming Committee storming in.

To settle who will next face Naomi, blue brand commissioner Shane McMahon scheduled a Fatal 5-Way match for Tuesday to determine the No. 1 contender for the SmackDown Women's Championship.

That match will highlight the show's journey toward the June 18 Money in the Bank pay-per-view. Aside from a challenger emerging in the women's division, Tuesday's SmackDown promises to advance the feud between Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin, welcome The New Day to the tag team title hunt and hype the upcoming WWE Championship contest between Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton.

A surprise may be in store for fans inside the Philips Arena in Atlanta. And SmackDown will look to outdo a sluggish edition of Raw.

Backstage news and social media updates provide an early look at the show before it airs on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on USA Network.

News, Potential Spoilers

SmackDown has been sans John Cena since WrestleMania, but that may change come Tuesday night.

The 16-time world champ, who has been on hiatus for the past several weeks, teased a return to the blue brand:

Despite not working the weekend's house shows, Randy Orton should be at SmackDown, too. His absence led to speculation about a potential injury, but there's apparently nothing to worry about.

Dave Meltzer noted for Figure Four Online: "The reason Randy Orton wasn't at the weekend shows is that he has a deal where he gets certain weekends off."

And WWE may be cooking up something interesting. PWInsider.com's Steven Fernandes reported: "WWE recently applied to trademark 'WWE Rockstars,' which from their description of use looks to be for talent rather than a name for a new show."

As often as announcers have referred to Shinsuke Nakamura as a rock star of late, one has to think he may be at the center of this new entity.

Shinsuke Nakamura celebrates pinning Kevin Owens.

If you've noticed a lack of momentum on WWE programming recently, you're not imagining things. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc), WWE has delivered so many multiwrestler matches of late because this is seen as a slow period. Things are expected to pick up in July.

That's not great news for those watching this week or in the coming month.

SmackDown Streaks

The Usos have proved difficult to take down for the moment.

Per CageMatch.net, Jimmy and Jey Uso have won their last three matches as a duo, all title defenses. The brothers are 6-2 in their last eight bouts.

The usual strategy of booking midcard champs to lose in non-title action isn't being employed with the current titleholders it seems. Once The New Day comes aboard, though, The Usos' chances of continuing their streak will decrease in a hurry.

Corbin, on the other hand, may not be able to remember what a three-match winning streak feels like.

Corbin lost his last six singles matches, and The Lone Wolf has gone 4-8 on SmackDown in 2017, per CageMatch.net. He seemed destined to climb into title contention, but WWE has chosen to cool him down in recent weeks.

His current feud with Zayn is a chance to change that. Unless SmackDown prefers to showcase Zayn over Corbin right now.

Moving Toward Money in the Bank

Zayn defeated Corbin in mere seconds on last week's SmackDown.

After the underdog rolled up his foe though, he suffered Corbin's rage. The Lone Wolf battered Zayn after the bell in a brawl that spilled out into the stands.

Zayn is sure to have payback on his mind. And Corbin should still be seething from his latest embarrassment. Their issues promise to escalate en route to Money in the Bank.

The New Day is likely to show its face on the SmackDown stage.

The trio made an appearance on last Tuesday's Talking Smack, officially joining the blue brand. The New Day discussed being excited to take on the squads that comprise the tag team division.

We should soon see who the group targets once it slides into the SmackDown spotlight. The Usos would be an obvious target thanks to the gold around their waists.

Orton will be on a championship chase of his own. After losing the WWE title to Mahal at Backlash, he has gone from hunted to hunter.

The Maharaja spent last Tuesday celebrating his huge victory.

Chances are, The Viper will be intent on ending Mahal's parade moving forward. Some RKOs are surely on the way for Mahal and his cronies The Singh Brothers.

Flair, Carmella, Natalya, Tamina and Becky Lynch will all collide in the night's biggest matchup. The winner of that five-way scrum will go on to face Naomi for the women's title at Money in the Bank.

The bout will feature an intriguing dynamic as Natalya, Tamina and Carmella have formed an alliance dubbed The Welcoming Committee. How much will they fight each other? How much will they gang up on Lynch and Flair?

However the fight unfolds, the women's title picture will clear up by the end of it.
