Angel Pagan Says He Won't Play in 2017 Season, Is Not Officially Retiring

Angel Pagan remains unsigned weeks into the 2017 Major League Baseball season, and it appears he won't be making an appearance on the diamond at all this year.

On Wednesday, Pagan told El Vocero's Yamaira Muniz Perez (h/t MLBTradeRumors.com's Steve Adams) he plans to sit out this season to spend time with his family.

However, Pagan stopped short of calling it quits and left the door open for a return in 2018.

The 35-year-old spent the last five seasons with the San Francisco Giants, and he remained effective at the plate throughout the 2016 season.

In 129 games a year ago, Pagan slashed .277/.331/.418 with a career-high 12 home runs and 55 RBI. He also appeared in the 2017 World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico. In eight total appearances, he slashed .286/.324/.371 while tying Carlos Beltran and Francisco Lindor with a team-high 10 hits.

Following the international spectacle, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Pagan "turned down two separate guaranteed deals" because he was "holding out for a certain desired salary."
