WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from April 18

The Doctor Chris MuellerApr 18, 2017

The cruiserweight division has already gone through a lot of ups and downs in its short lifetime, but one thing nobody can deny is the level of talent on the roster.

Neville has been a great heel champion, and the transition of Austin Aries from commentator to being a competitor has been fun to watch.

TJ Perkins turning heel was a needed change to his character, but other than those three individuals, nobody is seeing any forward movement.

With only one hour each week and a match or two on Raw, the whole division is fighting an uphill battle for screen time.

Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of 205 Live.

Tony Nese vs. Akira Tozawa

1 of 4

The Brian Kenrick came down to ringside to watch his rival, Akira Tozawa battle Tony Nese. We haven't seen much of Nese lately, so it was nice for the Premier Athlete to get some screen time.

Nese showed off a little at the start of the match to show his opponent who was superior in the strength department, but his size didn't intimidate Tozawa.

Kendrick tried to interfere, but the ref caught him before he was able to make contact. The distraction allowed Tozawa to pick up the win with a roll up.

The Wizard of Odd tried to explain himself, but Nese was understandably frustrated. He took out Kendrick with an elbow to the back of the head.

The match was good, but not great. The bigger storyline between Kendrick and Tozawa prevented Nese from being able to show what he is really capable of.

Grade: B-

Notes and Highlights

  • Tozawa and Kendrick are both great wrestlers, but this feud has been losing steam for a long time. They need to have the final match and move on.
  • Nese should turn babyface. His arsenal is almost too exciting for a heel.
  • It was nice to finally hear the announcers mention how similar Nese and Neville are.
  • Kendrick never wears the same pair of tights twice, or so it seems.

Noam Dar, Rich Swann and Alicia Fox

2 of 4

Rich Swann, Noam Dar and Alicia Fox all came to the ring to finally resolve the issues with who has been sending Foxy gifts.

After telling him all of the things he does she finds annoying, Fox kicked Dar to the curb while the crowd sang "Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye."

Once he realized he had her right where he wanted her, Swann revealed this was all a ruse to get revenge for his friend, Cedric Alexander.

This has all played out like a bad storyline on a teen soap opera, so it's a good thing it's over and we can all move on.

Grade: D

Notes and Highlights

  • Dar's accent makes him sound exactly like the actor David O'Hara, who happened to make an appearance on Tuesday's Agent's of Shield.
  • Some rude fan tried unsuccessfully to get a mean chant going for Fox. Kudos to the fans in attendance for shutting him down by not participating.
  • Foxy's freakout after everyone else had left was the best part.

Mustafa Ali vs. Ariya Daivari

3 of 4

The second match of the night saw Ariya Daivari take on Mustafa Ali. The Persian Lion has adopted an affluent foreigner gimmick by the looks of his new clothes.

Daivari is a solid heel, but he never gets the chance to build up any momentum. His feud with Jack Gallagher had promise, but it was over quickly.

The crowd was quiet as the match began, but Ali's exciting brand of offense always manages to get a reaction out of the fans in attendance.

Drew Gulak provided a distraction with a bullhorn and picket sign, allowing Daivari to pick up his first win in what feels like forever.

Grade: C+

Notes and Highlights

  • For some reason, a video of Ali arriving in a Corvette was shown before the match. If the goal was to make him look rich, they rented the wrong car.
  • WWE tried to hide it by turning the lights down, but you could tell a lot of people had left the arena by this point in the show.
  • Ali would be awesome in a tag team with a powerhouse to complement his high-flying ability.
  • Daivari's counter from a tornado DDT into a spinebuster looked great.

Austin Aries vs. TJ Perkins

4 of 4

The main event of the evening saw Austin Aries attempt to extract some revenge from TJ Perkins after the former cruiserweight champion defeated A Double in their last encounter.

Perkins showed his new attitude by spitting in his hand before offering it to Aries for the usual pre-match handshake, so Aries slapped his hand away.

The change in character has allowed Perkins to show more aggression during his matches, and it suits his high-energy style well. However, he still took things to the mat for a few nice submission holds.

Aries sold all his offense perfectly until it was time for him to get the upper hand. After escaping his own defeat a few times, Aries got the win with a stiff Discus Fivearm.

After the match was over, Neville rushed the ring and attacked his Payback opponent. With Perkins there to help, they were too much for Aries to overcome.

Grade: B+

Notes and Highlights

  • Perkins may need some new music. His current song doesn't suit a heel.
  • Aries should be getting a bigger reaction than what we heard during his entrance.
  • Corey Graves made a great point on commentary. Nobody should be dabbing anymore.
  • Filming 205 Live in the same facility used for NXT would make so much more sense. The fans would be more vocal and WWE could film several weeks at once.
