Undertaker Retires and More Twitter Reactions to WWE WrestleMania 2017 Results
On Sunday night, the annual celebration of all things sports entertainment took over Orlando, as WWE presented WrestleMania 33 on WWE Network. During and after the event, the pay-per-view outlet and Twitter users reacted to all of the biggest and most unforgettable moments of The Show of Shows.
Matt and Jeff Hardy returned to WWE and captured the Raw Tag Team Championships in a brutal Ladder Match, and John Cena proposed to Nikki Bella to round out a monumental show that felt like the most significant event of the year.
The most notable story of the telecast, though, was Undertaker's apparent retirement following his loss to Roman Reigns in the night's main event. After a quarter of a century of success at WrestleMania, he walked away from the event he helped evolve, leaving his trademark coat and hat in the center of the squared circle.

Twitter paid tribute to the man whose work, dedication and sacrifice helped make WrestleMania the must-see spectacle it has become.
#ThankYouTaker
The Undertaker removed his gloves, coat and hat and left it lying in the center of the ring. The significance of the moment struck those lingering on Twitter, who were following all of the coverage from Sunday's event, and a hashtag suddenly appeared.
Former intercontinental champion The Miz was one of the first recognizable stars to post it.
From there, the floodgates opened, and Superstars past and present honored the man who has been part of the fabric of WWE since 1990.
"That was my childhood. #ThankYouTaker
— Ariya Daivari (@AriyaDaivari411) April 3, 2017"
"My life is a dream. I grew up on the road in @WWE & learned from legends. I got to grow up & learn from the greatest of all #ThankyouTaker
— Drew Galloway (@GallowaySpeaks) April 3, 2017"
"For more reasons than I could ever list, #ThankYouTaker #Wrestlemania
— Austin Healy Aries (@AustinAries) April 3, 2017"
Former Indianapolis Colts punter, and admitted wrestling fan, Pat McAfee chimed in with his praise for a longtime favorite.
Internet and print analysts reacted as well, forgetting criticisms of match quality or arguments against Reigns to pay homage to a man integral to the industry they have dedicated their time and energy to covering.
"What an amazing moment and ending. #ThankYouTaker #Wrestlemania
— Gabe Sapolsky (@BookItGabe) April 3, 2017"
I shared my thoughts on Twitter as well.
Every so often, a performer comes along who completely dedicates himself to the art of his craft. He is loyal to his character, sacrifices his time with family and physical well-being for the entertainment of the masses. He creates unforgettable moments that will be indelibly etched in the minds of fans lucky enough to see him work.
Sunday night, the wrestling world waved goodbye to one such performer.
Who knows when, or if, we will ever see another like him.
Broken No More
The Hardy Boyz made their return to WWE Sunday night, fresh off an incredible run in TNA, Ring of Honor and various independent promotions as The Broken Hardys. The legendary brother team won champion No. 7 in a Ladder Match, and Twitter exploded.
Former TNA co-workers Mia Yim (Jade) and "Cowboy" James Storm applauded the return.
Matt Jackson of the Ring of Honor tag team champions The Young Bucks, fresh off a victory over the brothers at Supercard of Honor Saturday night, raised a valid question.
Others, from wrestlers like Shane Helms and Leva Bates to analysts and even Las Vegas Fight Shop, were overcome with delight to see the iconic tandem back together on the WrestleMania stage.
Matt's wife Reby Sky posted an NSFW Tweet, while his son Maxwell's account tweeted out a special photo commemorating the occasion.
Finally, The Young Bucks' Nick Jackson followed up their first tweet with a respectful one that included their thanks for working with Matt and Jeff.
The return was another one of those WrestleMania moments, the likes of which the event is built upon in this, the New Era. Now, the Hardys will look to inject life in a tag team division that has revolved around the same four tag teams for the last year.
John Cena Proposes
For fans of Total Divas, the moment they have waited six seasons for finally occurred Sunday night, as John Cena proposed to longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella following a victory over The Miz and Maryse.
Mainstream media covered the occasion.
"John Cena gets engaged to Nikki Bella live on #WrestleMania 33 https://t.co/o4ntVkBv5e pic.twitter.com/SFtfPWv7uj
— People Magazine (@people) April 3, 2017"
Cena's proposal was a nice moment, one that was handled extremely well by Cena. The meeting between the happy couple and their mothers at ringside made the moment feel more special than it otherwise would have.
The mainstream coverage is good for WWE in that it brings new eyes to the product. Given Cena's blossoming movie career, the company should probably expect more coverage going forward.
