Alec NathanMar 28, 2017

The 2017 Miami Open in Key Biscayne, Florida, has been an action-packed affair on both sides of the draw, and Tuesday was no different.

With Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori all in action, the top remaining seeds on the men's side were determined to carve out spots in the quarterfinals as the end of the Sunshine State fortnight creeps into view.

Elsewhere, two quarterfinal matches took center stage in the women's bracket as Karolina Pliskova and Caroline Wozniacki attempted to secure semifinal berths.

Fabio Fognini vs. Donald YoungFognini 6-0, 6-4

The day's biggest stunner came in the form of an upset courtesy of No. 16 seed Alexander Zverev—who battled back from a set down to defeat No. 1 seed Wawrinka 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 thanks to some overpowering precision from the baseline, as Deadspin's Giri Nathan noted:

Zverev broke Wawrinka a grand total of five times to bounce him, and the last of those crucial conversions came with the match on the line, via Tennis TV on Twitter:

Elsewhere, Nadal is moving on to the quarterfinals following a two-set battle with Nicolas Mahut, as ESPN's Brad Gilbert observed:

In fact, Mahut—who was ousted in straight sets—threatened to force a third frame when he took Nadal to a tiebreak after playing the Spaniard even throughout the second stanza. But ultimately, Nadal flashed more composure in the match's decisive moments to extend his stay in South Florida.

As a result, he'll meet Jack Sock in the next round after the American ended Jared Donaldson's improbable run with a swift 6-2, 6-1 victory in the early stages of Tuesday's action.

Sock is now 18-3 in 2017 by virtue of the win, and he's the last American standing after Italian Fabio Fognini downed Donald Young Tuesday afternoon.

According to ATP World Tour's Josh Meiseles, Sock is on a roll that stands out when compared to his Red, White and Blue peers:

Once those matches concluded, Federer took to Stadium Court and dispatched Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(5), 7-6(4) to snare his third consecutive straight-set victory at the Miami Open.

"It's amazing what 12 months can do," Federer said, referencing last year's withdrawal from the Miami Open due to illness, according to the Associated Press' Tim Reynolds. "Sometimes you've got to go down to get back up again."

Already a two-time champion in 2017 thanks to title triumphs at the Australian Open and BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, Federer hasn't shown any signs of slowing down since he arrived in Florida.

Now headed to the quarterfinals, Federer will clash with Tomas Berdych after the 31-year-old defeated  Adrian Mannarino in straight sets Tuesday afternoon.

Federer and Berdych have met frequently over the past few years, but it's clear the 18-time Grand Slam winner has the upper hand. All told, Federer is 17-6 all-time against Berdych, with his most recent win coming in straight sets at the Australian Open just three months ago.

Women's Recap

No. 2 Karolina Pliskova vs. No. 26 Mirjana Lucic-BaroniPliskova 6-3, 6-4
No. 12 Caroline Wozniacki vs. Lucie SafarovaWozniacki 6-4, 6-3

The day's first quarterfinal on the women's side was a rather expedient affair despite some tense moments in the second set.

Matched up against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, the second-seeded Pliskova carved out her spot among the final four women's competitors with a 6-3, 6-4 victory that took all of 72 minutes.

The WTA's official Twitter account relayed video of match point:

Not only did the triumph represent Pliskova's fourth straight without dropping a set, but it allowed her to exact some revenge after Lucic-Baroni knocked her out of the Australian Open quarterfinals.

"I think I played much better here than I was playing [in Melbourne]," Pliskova said after the win, per WTATennis.com. "Also, the conditions here are different, and she was playing better tennis there because it was faster. It suited her better in Australia."

By virtue of the win, Pliskova will now square off against Wozniacki—who put Lucie Safarova away in straight sets.

The WTA's official Twitter account offered a look at Wozniacki's post-match comments following the big win:

The 10-seed differential between the two would seem to indicate Pliskova will be the favorite when they clash in the semifinals, but history suggests otherwise.

Dating back to their first-ever meeting four years ago in Miami, Wozniacki owns a 3-1 lead all-time against Pliskova. That said, the No. 2 seed's lone win did come in their last showdown earlier this year in a finals showdown in Qatar.

The other two women's quarterfinals are slated to unfold Wednesday when No. 1 Angelique Kerber squares off against No. 11 Venus Williams and No. 3 Simona Halep battles against No. 10 Johanna Konta for semifinal status.
