Joe Mixon Reportedly Won't Be Drafted by Dolphins Due to Character Concerns
The Miami Dolphins reportedly will not draft former Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.
"Zero percent chance," a source told Salguero.
Mixon's off-field issues are obviously a huge concern for the Dolphins (and potentially many other teams). He was suspended for one game in 2016 after an altercation with a female parking attendant. Mixon was ticketed and tore up the citation in front of the attendant before slowly driving toward her, presumably as an intimidation tactic.
His more infamous moment came in 2014, however, when he punched Amelia Molitor during an altercation with her and her friend in a sandwich shop. Mixon struck her so hard that she broke bones in her jaw and cheekbone. He was suspended for a season due to the incident and ultimately entered an Alford plea, claiming he was innocent but acknowledging a jury would likely find him guilty.
A judge sentenced him to 100 hours of community service. Video of the incident was released in Dec. 2016.
Mixon is a controversial figure, especially after footage of the incident surfaced, but he was also highly productive for Oklahoma after returning to action, rushing for 2,027 yards and 17 touchdowns over the past two seasons. That has left teams with a conundrum: Give Mixon a second chance based on his talent, or avoid him altogether.
"We can't draft him [because of the assault charge], but he'll be the best running back from this class," a scout told B/R's Matt Miller. "He's on par with Zeke [Elliott] and David Johnson."
