Saturday Recap
Wawrinka dispatched Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-4, while Federer had a slightly tougher time taking down American qualifier Frances Tiafoe. Federer needed a tiebreak to take the first set before finding a groove in the second, prevailing 7-6(2), 6-3.
After the match, Federer praised the 19-year-old, per the ATP World Tour's official website:
"I've hit with Frances maybe twice before. I saw the power he had, the explosivity he had, how he easily can generate pace. He seemed to be fearless, good serving, taking the ball early and making the plays. What I like to see is when a younger player comes out and really feels he has nothing to lose and only has stuff to gain.
"
The Times' Stuart Fraser noted Federer's red-hot start to the 2017 season:
Even Federer's biggest fans likely didn't expect the 18-time Grand Slam champion to continue playing this well at 35. The Swiss was excellent on serve against Tiafoe, dropping only 11 of 56 points. He also collected eight aces and zero double-faults.
While Federer is firing on all cylinders on the hard court, it will be interesting to see whether he can maintain his current pace when the clay-court season gets underway in preparation for the French Open.
Muguruza stumbled early against Shuai Zhang, dropping the first set 4-6. She recovered to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-2. The 23-year-old celebrated her victory on Twitter:
Muguruza didn't get off to a great start in Key Biscayne. She faced match point before beating McHale and faced an admonishment (Warning: link contains NSFW language) from her coach, Sam Sumyk, after the two had a disagreement.
While she didn't have a commanding performance against Zhang, Muguruza survived and advanced.
Pliskova also encountered some trouble against Yulia Putintseva but moved on following a 7-5, 6-3 win. The WTA shared a replay of match point:
A lengthy rain delay extended their match. As tournament workers were drying the court, Pliskova remained unnerved, according to tennis writer Victoria Chiesa:
Agnieszka Radwanska was the highest seed to exit the Miami Open Saturday. The fifth-seeded Polish star lost in straight sets, 0-6, 3-6, to 26th-seeded Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.
Radwanska struggled mightily on serve. She won just seven of her 26 first-service points and allowed eight break-point opportunities to Lucic-Baroni. Lucic-Baroni allowed even more break-point opportunities (10) but consistently danced out of danger, saving seven of the points.
On the men's side, No. 6 seed Dominic Thiem couldn't get past Borna Coric. Thiem got off to a bad start, dropping the first set 1-6. While he improved in the second, he couldn't find an answer for Coric's serve. The Czech saved three of Thiem's four break-point chances and won 67 percent of his service points.
Saturday was the first time the two have met at an ATP World Tour event, and it's unlikely to be the last for the two young stars.
A full schedule for Sunday's matches, as well as the men's singles and women's singles draws are available on the Miami Open's official website.
