Jabrill Peppers at Michigan Pro Day 2017: Photos, Video Highlights and Reaction
Jabrill Peppers understandably allowed his superb combine performance to stand Friday at Michigan's pro day. However, the do-everything star did take the field for some defensive drills to show the litany of coaches on hand what he could do at the next level.
At least eight head coaches were in attendance, highlighted by Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin and Sean Payton, per NFL Network's Chase Goodbread. Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson were also in attendance.
Peppers, a safety-linebacker hybrid who played both sides of the ball at Michigan, ran a 4.46-second 40 at the combine. He also added a 35.5-inch vertical leap and a 128-inch broad jump, all putting him among the best in his position group.
"He is one of the fastest people in a football uniform I've ever seen," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh told Mike Mayock on NFL Network. He's so fast when he's got the football uniform on—that's what a 4.3 or 4.4 looks like. You know some guys run the 4.3 in shorts and then they put the uniform on, and that's what a 4.7 feels like. He's fast. He can get into the line of scrimmage, he can blitz, he can play linebacker, but he can also play safety, he can play nickel."
Peppers said he understands concern regarding his positionality and plans to meet with nearly three quarters of the league before the draft, per Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com. He has already met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.
Justin Rose of WXYZ provided video of Peppers discussing what teams like about him:
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller has Peppers going No. 28 overall to the Dallas Cowboys in his latest mock draft. Peppers seems to be teetering on the edge of the first round but could be available at the beginning of Day 2.
Miller highlights a perfect storm for the Cleveland Browns, in which they land Myles Garrett No. 1 overall and fortify their defense by getting Peppers at the top of the second round. He currently ranks 31st overall on Miller's big board.
While there will be little of note from Peppers' pro day from an athletic standpoint—the drills he did Friday were mostly just there to showcase his already well-established athleticism—meeting with head coaches and general managers might be the one thing that pushes him into the first round. Peppers' football mind and love of the game has never been in question.
It's likely he'll find someone in attendance who will be enamored enough to take him Day 1 and figure out the whole position thing later.
