Miami Open Masters 2017 Results: Scores, Bracket and Schedule After Thursday

Alec NathanMar 23, 2017

The opening week at the 2017 Miami Open pressed on Thursday with 62 players in action over the course of 31 matches.

And while the men's side of the draw continued to trudge through first-round play, the women's side featured several top players on the court as second-round play picked up underneath the South Florida sun.

Specifically, eyes were trained on No. 2 seed Karolina Pliskova and No. 13 seed Elena Vesnina after they made deep runs in Indian Wells, California, a week ago.

A quick glance at the day's scoreboard shows the men's side featured several three-set thrillers.

For starters, Spaniard Tommy Robredo came back from a set down to defeat Nikoloz Basilashvili in a match that lasted nearly two hours to set up a second-round date with American Sam Querrey.

Speaking of competitors hailing from the United States, Frances Tiafoe sneaked past Konstantin Kravchuk following a tense two first sets thanks to a sensational 6-1 showing in the match's decisive frame, as Tennis TV showed on Twitter:

After his win, Tiafoe told Tennis TV he's giddy about his upcoming matchup with Roger Federer

Then there was Borna Coric, who put away Marcel Granollers in a match that flirted with the three-hour mark.

And while there were plenty of tense moments after Coric squandered a pair of match points in excruciating fashion, he collected himself and dispatched Granollers to set up an intriguing tilt against Dominic Thiem, as Tennis TV documented on Twitter:

While Thiem owns a 54-spot edge on Coric in the ATP World Tour rankings, the two have never met in a tournament setting before. As a result, Thiem will have to withstand Coric's aggression out of the gate and learn on the fly against one of the tour's upstart talents.

A year ago, Pliskova made the semifinals in Indian Wells before she crashed out in the second round at the Miami Open.

On Thursday, she made sure she wouldn't experience an identical slip-up this year.

Fresh off a trip to the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open, Pliskova opened her stay in South Florida with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 win over American Madison Brengle.

Pliskova dictated pace from the baseline throughout, and she waltzed in Round 3 by winning 76 percent of her first-service points to go with 27 winners.

Fittingly, Pliskova put the finishing touches on her breezy 6-1 first-set win with a flurry of powerful groundstrokes, as the WTA documented on Twitter:

"The last few matches it's not really about my serve because the percentage is a little low, but I'm happy that I have my game from the baseline," Pliskova said after the win, per WTATennis.com. "I was feeling the ball pretty well today.

In the third round, Pliskova will square off against Yulia Putintseva—who defeated Carina Witthoeft 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday.

Incidentally, Pliskova and Putintseva met in Brisbane, Australia, three months ago at the start of the 2017 season. And while Pliskova got the best of her opponent in straight sets (6-3, 6-1), it should be noted that Putintseva defeated the tournament's No. 2 seed five years ago by the same scoreline.

Finally, a couple of favorites will be in trouble when play resumes Friday.

Most notably, No. 6 seed Garbine Muguruza fell behind early against Christina McHale—who won the first set 6-0 and led 3-2 in the second set before play was halted.

Elsewhere, Vesnina is on the ropes after splitting the first two sets and falling behind 5-3 in the third set versus the unranked Ajla Tomljanovic.

The overnight weather delay will help Vesnina regain some composure, but she'll need to come up with several clutch moments Friday in order to extend her stay and vie for a Sunshine Double.
