Notable Tuesday Results
Rafael Nadal def. Fernando Verdasco; 6-3, 7-5

Nadal has dominated his head-to-head showdowns with Fernando Verdasco throughout his career, and Tuesday was more of the same in a straight-sets victory.
According to the ATP World Tour's official website, Nadal is 16-3 against Verdasco. He commented on yet another victory over his fellow Spaniard.
"I played a good match, no?" Nadal said, per the ATP World Tour's website. "Very aggressive with my serve, serving well, hitting good forehands, good backhands. ... Very happy. I think I played much better today than the first day. So very pleased with my performance."
Verdasco's mistakes ruined his upset bid. He tallied seven double-faults, per the tournament's official website, and won just 23 percent of his second-service points. That helped Nadal create five break points, three of which he won.
Verdasco notched just a single break throughout the match.
Venus Williams def. Shuai Peng; 3-6, 6-1, 6-3

Williams advanced to the quarterfinals, but not without a challenge.
Shuai Peng won the first set in a battle of break points. According to the tournament's official website, Peng won three of her eight break points in that opening set, while Williams won just one of two.
However, Williams bounced back and dominated the second set, as the WTA captured:
The momentum didn't immediately carry over, as Peng earned an early break in the decisive set before Williams controlled the closing stretch to earn the victory. Tennis journalist Abigail Johnson praised Williams' "terrific display of mental composure and physical consistency under pressure."
That composure proved critical because she struggled with consistency on the serve. The tournament's official website noted she double-faulted six times and won just 65 percent of her first-service points and 41 percent of the second-service points.
Still, she prevailed with seven break points to earn the victory and advance.
Roger Federer def. Steve Johnson; 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4)

Federer set up his fourth-round showdown with Nadal by outlasting Steve Johnson in a back-and-forth match that went to tiebreakers in each of the two sets.
Neither Federer nor Johnson earned a break in the first set, but the Swiss star seized control of the tiebreak.
Tennis TV shared the point that clinched the first set for Federer:
The theme of remaining on serve continued in the second set, although Federer created four break-point opportunities, per the event's official website. However, Johnson saved them all and forced another tiebreak before ultimately falling to the living legend.
That means fans will get to see the 36th battle between Federer and Nadal. According to the ATP World Tour's official website, Nadal owns a commanding 23-12 advantage in those showdowns. Still, Federer has won the last two, including a five-set thriller in the Australian Open earlier this year.
If Federer serves like he did Tuesday (he won 87 percent of his first-service points, per the event's website), he can extend that winning streak to three.
Novak Djokovic def. Juan Martin del Potro; 7-5, 4-6, 6-1
He waited until the third set to look like the dominant force he can be, but Djokovic advanced with a victory over Juan Martin del Potro.
Djokovic went down an early break but bounced back with a couple of his own in the first set. However, that formula didn't work in the second, as Del Potro seized a quick double-break advantage and held off Djokovic's comeback effort.
He finished the set with a powerful serve, as Tennis TV shared:
That's when Djokovic took over. He notched a couple of early breaks, and Howard Bryant of ESPN The Magazine said, "He's back!!! Djokovic squeezing the life out of Delpo. The boa constrictor has returned. Defense to offense, conviction. The FH strong."
Del Potro tallied an impressive 13 aces in defeat, per the tournament's official website, but it was not enough in that last set.
Djokovic will play No. 15 seed Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round. Kyrgios won their only head-to-head matchup, per the ATP's official website, and it came this year in Acapulco, Mexico. However, if Djokovic plays like he did in the final set Tuesday, he should have enough to advance.
