WWE 205 Live Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from March 14

The Doctor Chris MuellerMar 14, 2017

Austin Aries has injected new life into the cruiserweight division, but 205 Live still has a long way to go in establishing itself as WWE's third main roster brand.

WWE aired the second episode of Bring It To The Table after Raw, and JBL made some great points regarding the cruiserweight-exclusive show.

He said he was sick of seeing the carnival storylines instead of the fast-paced action we saw during the Cruiserweight Classic, and he's right.

As funny as some of the segments can be, WWE should be devoting more of the one-hour program to actual wrestling and letting the storylines develop during Raw.

Let's see if this week's episode of 205 Live improved on last week's show.

Mustafa Ali vs. Drew Gulak

1 of 3

The first match of the night saw Mustafa Ali take on someone who should be doing a lot more than jobbing to every babyface, Drew Gulak.

Thankfully, Gulak was given some time to show off his impressive repertoire of submission holds, but he still ended up being defeated by the beautiful reverse 450 splash Ali has become known for.

After the match was over, Gulak demanded a microphone and talked about giving it his all every week without being appreciated. He said the problem is 205 Live, and the brand needs to change.

He may be the bad guy, but he isn't wrong. Something needs to be done to make 205 Live feel like an extension of Raw and SmackDown, not the C-show.

The match between Ali and Gulak was uneventful, but it's always fun to see Ali hit his finisher.

Grade: C-

Notes and Highlights

  • Neville opened the show with a scathing promo directed at the five men who would be participating in the No. 1 Contender's match in the main event. His heel character has developed faster than expected, and he has shown everyone he is capable of giving a promo without someone else to play off of.
  • Gulak showed some impressive strength when he pulled Ali off the top rope, held on to him without letting him touch the mat, lifted him back up and slammed him to the mat.
  • I hope something comes from Gulak's outburst. He has been the most misused Superstar since the division was given its own show.

Rich Swann and Jack Gallagher vs. Ariya Daivari and Noam Dar

2 of 3

The second contest of the night saw Jack Gallagher team up with Rich Swann to battle Noam Dar and Ariya Daivari.

The match was short and didn't give anyone a chance to shine. WWE was obviously trying to give the main event more time, but it shouldn't try to shoehorn in a match just so it has three on the card. Two good performances are better than three average displays every time.

Dar picked up the win for his team, but nobody is going to remember this match in 48 hours. A delivery man brought a big stuffed bear for Foxy, and Dar pretended he sent the gift again.

Grade: C-

Notes and Highlights

  • Valentine's Day was almost exactly one month ago. Why is WWE continuing with the storyline of someone sending Foxy gifts? You have to wonder if management actually has a plan in place to reveal who has been sending the presents or if everything has been done on the fly.
  • How did Gallagher go from a threat to Neville's title back to doing umbrella tricks?
  • Random tag team matches can be fun sometimes, but they happen too often on 205 Live.

Fatal 5-Way

3 of 3

The main event of the evening was a Fatal 5-Way match to determine who would face Neville for the Cruiserweight Championship at WrestleMania 33.

Austin Aries, Akira Tozawa, Tony Nese, TJ Perkins and The Brian Kendrick each brought their own unique brand of offense to the match, which made for several entertaining moments.

Nese was the first person to be eliminated when he tapped out to an armbar from Perkins, and Tozawa followed shortly after Kendrick hit him with Sliced Bread No. 2.

Kendrick took out Perkins to get his second elimination, but he wasn't able to overcome the force of nature known as A Double.

This bout made up for the two lackluster matches before it, and it set up what should be an outstanding title match at WrestleMania between Aries and Neville.

Grade: B+

Notes and Highlights

  • The crowd booing while Perkins dabbed is another reason why WWE should turn him heel as soon as possible.
  • Mauro Ranallo is one of the best commentators WWE has hired in a long time, but the two-man desk made for a smoother presentation. Corey Graves and Tom Phillips work well together thanks to their time in NXT.
  • Nese and Aries crashing through the barricade when The Premier Athlete hit his patented running knee was an awesome spot. We see the barricade get knocked down all the time, but nobody expects the cruiserweights to do it.
  • Tozawa's German suplex is always a thing of beauty, but his suicide dive is just as good.
