Indian Wells Tennis 2017: Saturday Scores, Results and Updated Schedule

Tyler ConwayMar 11, 2017

The 2017 BNP Paribas Open already lost the women's No. 1 seed when Serena Williams withdrew due to a knee injury. Its top men's seed bowed out in a shocking upset Saturday night.

Top-seeded Andy Murray dropped a 6-4, 7-6 (5) match to qualifier Vasek Pospisil in their second-round match, sending the top half of the bracket into a state of flux. The Canadian, who needed three sets to escape his first-round matchup, took advantage of Murray's struggles with his serve and played a stellar match overall.

Murray double-faulted seven times, helping provide 10 break-point chances for Pospisil. He converted four of those opportunities to turn the tide in a match that was almost perfectly even. Pospisil won 73 total points to Murray's 70.

Tennis TV provided highlights from the win:

Josh Meiseles of the ATP contextualized the historic upset:

Pospisil was once ranked No. 25 in the world, so it's not as if Murray lost to someone without merit. His nightmare 2016 pushed him outside the top 100 in the rankings, and he entered the weekend ranked 129th.

The loss for Murray comes a week after he got his first win of the 2017 season in Dubai. He had made the finals in seven of his previous eight tournaments.

Pospisil's upset wiped the slate seemingly clean for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who would have otherwise been the centerpiece of discussion. The No. 7 seed lost a 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 matchup to Italian Fabio Fognini. The match took nearly two-and-a -half hours to complete, with both men putting forth exhaustive efforts.

Fognini won just two more points than Tsonga and was actually broken four times to three. It's Fognini's first win over Tsonga in five tries.

"I am happy about my performance. It's a good victory for sure," Fognini told Tennis Channel, per the AAP (via SBS.com). "Today was really hot so the ball was bouncing a lot. I love playing with sun and good weather."

Aside from those two losses, it was mostly a straightforward day. The biggest women's upsets were near the bottom of the seeding pool. Samantha Stosur dropped the final two sets in her loss to Julia Gorges, who came back with consecutive 6-4 wins in the second and third sets after dropping the first.

No. 22 seed Anastasija Sevastova, No. 23 seed Carla Suarez Navarro, No. 27 seed Yulia Putintseva and No. 30 seed Zhang Shuai were also sent home earlier than expected.

No. 19 seed Ivo Karlovic and No. 30 seed Feliciano Lopez were also eliminated by unranked opponents.

Stan Wawrinka, Angelique Kerber and Venus Williams were among the players who passed through to the third round without issue.
