Kyle Edmund starred in the early stages Friday when he put Portuguese challenger Gastao Elias away in straight sets to lock up a spot in the second round.
Edmund, who hails from the United Kingdom, will now square off against Novak Djokovic when he returns to action in Indian Wells.
Those two have met twice previously, with Djokovic emerging victorious on both occasions. Their last clash came just a few months ago when Djokovic captured a straight-set win over Edmund in the U.S. Open's round of 16.
"The things [Djokovic] does well are making a lot of balls and being quick around the court. It's tough to get the ball by him and break him down," Edmund said Friday, per ATPWorldTour.com. "These are things that I've experienced the last two times I've played him. I'll try and use that on Sunday."
South African Kevin Anderson also took care of business in straight sets as he downed Italian Federico Gaio 6-1, 6-4.
The win means Anderson will now face the 24th-seeded Steve Johnson in Round 2 after Johnson received a bye through the initial proceedings.
As it turns out, those two veterans share some history.
Johnson and Anderson have met seven times in the past, with Anderson owning a 4-3 edge in their all-time series. However, Johnson has been the superior player of late.
The American has won each of their last two matches, including a 2015 clash in Austria. That said, it should be noted that each of those Johnson triumphs went the distance as Anderson refused to back down on both occasions.
Women's Draw
| Madison Brengle vs. Roberta Vinci | Vinci 7-6, 6-4 |
| Daria Gavrilova vs. Yanina Wickmayer | Gavrilova 6-2, 7-6 |
| Qiang Wang vs. Elina Svitolina | Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 |
| Heather Watson vs. Johanna Konta | Konta 6-4, 6-4 |
| Caroline Garcia vs. Evgeniya Rodina | Garcia 6-3, 6-3 |
| Timea Bacsinszky vs. Monica Niculescu | Bacsinszky 7-5, 6-2 |
| Kayla Day vs. Mirjana Lucic-Baroni | Day 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 |
| Garbine Muguruza vs. Kirsten Flipkens | Muguruza 6-2, 6-3 |
| Monica Puig vs. Karolina Pliskova | Pliskova 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 |
| Jelena Ostapenko vs. Dominika Cibulkova | Cibulkova 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 |
| Irina Begu vs. Louisa Chirico | Begu 6-1, 7-5 |
| Svetlana Kuznetsova vs. Johanna Larsson | Kuznetsova 7-6, 6-4 |
| Belinda Bencic vs. Kiki Bertens | Bertens 6-2, 6-2 |
| Darya Kasatkina vs. Kristyna Pliskova | Pliskova 6-0, 6-3 |
| Barbora Strycova vs. Sara Errani | Strycova 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 |
| Anett Kontaveit vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova | Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-4 |
Unlike the men's side of the draw, there were plenty of high-seeded women in action Friday.
Chief among them was Johanna Konta, who sent compatriot Heather Watson packing with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
"It was definitely a brilliant experience for both of us as Fed Cup team-mates and I am very happy to have come through it," Konta said, per BBC Sport.
The No. 11 seed on the women's side, Konta looked sharp in her first match back following a month off due to a left foot injury.
"I think there is definitely an adjustment period," Konta said of returning to the court, per WTATennis.com. "I hadn't played a tour match since the Australian Open and Fed Cup was about three weeks ago. It's not that long of a time, but in terms of the tour, it's a bit of time."
With a win in hand, Konta will now square off against Caroline Garcia in the third round after she defeated Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets Friday.
In American news, 17-year-old Kayla Day made a statement when she pulled off an upset of No. 32 seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, as the WTA documented on Twitter:
Considering Day was bounced in the first round at the Australian Open when she looked overwhelmed against Andrea Petkovic, a pair of wins in Indian Wells should have her confidence on the rise with a quarterfinal berth looking possible.
