NFL Combine 2017 Results: Day 5 Highlights, Reaction and Recap

Tyler ConwayMar 6, 2017

The 2017 NFL Scouting Combine wrapped up Monday, when defensive backs and safeties took to the field for the final day of testing in Indianapolis.

Suffice it to say this is a class full of potentially freakish athletes, with none having a bigger showing than Connecticut's Obi Melifonwu.

The former Huskies star, who came into the combine a little under the radar due to the team's struggles, blasted toward the top of the page in nearly every athletic category. Melifonwu posted jumping numbers that made him better suited for the NBA than NFL, turning in a 44-inch vertical and 141-inch broad jump. Both of those numbers were the best among players tested Monday.

ESPN Stats & Info provided numbers comparing Melifonwu to former teammate Byron Jones:

Melifonwu's 4.40-second time in the 40-yard dash was also tops among safeties, and he did a solid 17 reps on the bench press. Suffice it to say Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was impressed:

"I'm a hard worker, I'm a dependable guy," Melifonwu said, per Ken Duffy of MassLive. "I'm a guy that can fill a lot of roles, and I'm a guy that (teams) can count on. Like I said, I'm very versatile. I want (teams) to know that choosing me will be one of the best decisions they have made."

Also drawing praise from Seattle was Washington safety Budda Baker, who might have thrown himself into first-round consideration. Baker ran the 40 in 4.45 seconds but was among the worst safeties during both jumping portions. His 115-inch broad jump was only one inch better than Channing Stribling's Monday-worst leap.

Earl Thomas was nonetheless impressed by Baker:

The best 40 time of the day went to Jalen Myrick of Minnesota, who ran in an impressive 4.28 seconds. If it weren't for John Ross, we likely would have come away impressed with Myrick as the top runner in his class. Instead, he sits six hundredths of a second behind Ross, who set a new combine record at 4.22 seconds.

The NFL offered video, while Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck sent out his praise:

Still, no 40 time was going to top the anticipation of NFL Network's Rich Eisen. The yearly tradition, which benefits St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, saw Eisen run in a time of 6.02 seconds while wearing his suit. The NFL's Twitter feed put Eisen's attempt next to record-setter Ross:

LSU safety Jamal Adams, widely considered the best safety in this class, had a solid overall day. He ran a 4.56-second time in the 40, did 18 reps on the bench press and posted a 120-inch broad jump. The only real blemish on his trip to Indy was a 31.5-inch vertical that tied for the third-worst mark among safeties.

A scout who spoke to Bleacher Report's Matt Miller is impressed with Adams:

Another top defensive back, Marshon Lattimore, started his day well but ended it with an injury. The Ohio State product ran an excellent 4.36-second time in the 40-yard dash, posted a 38.5-inch vertical and a 132-inch broad jump. He also left with what's being called a minor hamstring injury, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter says Lattimore should be available for the Ohio State pro day on March 23.

USC product Adoree Jackson, one of college football's most explosive playmakers last season, was impressive in showing scouts he can become a solid defensive back. He ran the 40 in 4.42 seconds, posted a 36-inch vertical and impressed ESPN's Matt Bowen with his footwork:

The defensive backs typically have one of the more impressive athletic days at the combine despite rarely receiving the same level of coverage as the skill-position players and quarterbacks. This was more of the same, especially with Melifonwu walking away as one of the weekend's biggest winners.
