Smoke Signals: Only room for one Sherman on this team!

Publicly, players and coaches at Redskins Park are claiming that the addition of "consultant" Sherman Lewis says nothing bad about the coaching staff or the performance of the players. Lewis "has a lot to offer," we are told. Oh, really? Well, if he has so much to offer, why has he been retired for 5 years? Why hasn't he been working for other NFL teams if his advice is so valuable?

"Privately, some players wondered what this meant, initially unsure of Lewis' role. They also wondered what he'd be able to add."

"I don't think there is a situation where they help," one NFL source said. "The coaches have to be [ticked]. When consultants come in, the coach loses credibility with the team.""

Offensive Coordinator Sherman Smith seems appropriately unconvinced by the hiring of Sherman Lewis. [Not enough room on this team for another Sherman?]

""I don't think he'll tell us anything we don't already know," said Smith, the offensive coordinator. "I think we're doing the scheme the right way, so if he sees something in our scheme that we don't, that will help us.

"We think it's about the execution."

"We have a handle on the scheme. Z-man knows the scheme. We feel the scheme is good. I don't think he'll come in and say you need to run this route two yards deeper or you need to do more of this or that. We don't think that's the issue. Our players and we agree, we just need to do everything better. We don't need to do anything different."
