NHL Centennial Classic: Live Score and Updates for Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings

Carol SchramJan 1, 2017

Auston Matthews was the overtime hero as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in front of over 40,000 fans at Toronto's BMO Field in the 2017 Centennial Classic.

The outdoor game, a celebration of the NHL's 100th anniversary, started slowly, with just one goal through the first two periods. The dam broke in the third, with the Leafs building a 4-1 lead before the Red Wings fought back to tie, scoring two goals in the last 1:46 of regulation with goaltender Jared Coreau on the bench for the extra attacker.

Anthony Mantha was awarded the equalizer, his second goal of the game, with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock, forcing the three-on-three showdown and setting up Matthews' heroics. With his 19th and 20th goals of the season, Matthews has now wrested the rookie goal-scoring lead away from Patrik Laine.ย
