The Defense Is Here, Will The Offense Follow With Crabtree?

AJ HarrisonOct 7, 2009

After scoring three touchdowns on defense against the St. Louis Rams this past weekend, the Niner's O got a boost with the signing of first round pick Michael Crabtree.

Never mind the fact that Crabtree was the last player to be signed in the NFL draft or that he held out through the first four games of the regular season. His signing gives Shaun Hill a prime time target to throw to.

There is one thing that they have been lacking and that has been a big time wide out. Issac Bruce is serving as a good mentor to Josh Morgan but there has not been someone across the field from him until now.

The offense has sputtered through the air ever since the dynamic duo of Jeff Garcia and T.O. disbanded in the early 2000's. Since then, we have gone through countless offensive coordinators, multiple quarterbacks and three head coaches.

With Singletary at the helm, I am guessing that with Crabtree the Niners will not change their run first philosophy. When Frank Gore gets healthy the Niners will have a good pair of hard nosed runners in Gore and Glen Coffee.

The test will be whether Crabtree will have a different Quarterback passing him the ball in '10. With the Panthers winning woes, the first round draft pick that Carolina will be sending to the Bay Area is looking better each week.

The pick (which I will estimate will be in the Top Ten) could go towards protecting Hill, rushing against Hill in practice or replacing him all together. Hill is a great game manager but lacks the ideal arm that teams want their QB to have.

I would like to see Taylor Mays drafted as he seems like a Ronnie Lott which is something that could help Patrick Willis and could scare the bejeebers out of opposing offenses. If the Niners decide to go the QB route, Colt McCoy looks very good compared to Tebow or Sneed.

Whoever throws the ball to Crabtree is going to look better with this dynamic playmaker. Hopefully he will join the ranks of great Niner receivers before M.C. Hammer has to come back to negotiate a new contract.
