Cowboys' Lucky Whitehead Left in Dallas for Violation of Team Rules

Timothy RappDec 11, 2016

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Lucky Whitehead won't travel to New York to face the Giants in a crucial NFC East showdown Sunday due to a violation of team rules, according to Nick Eatman of the team's website.

Both Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and Mike Fisher of Scout.com reported that Whitehead missed a team meeting Saturday morning, which resulted in his de facto one-game suspension.

Per Fisher, Whitehead spent Friday evening—a non-curfew night for Cowboys players—partying well into the morning before posting about his evening on social media. Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram wrote that Whitehead was suspended for failing to make a meeting and not for that social media post, however.

According to Fisher, the Cowboys even called the authorities when Whitehead didn't show up hours after the Saturday meeting began. He eventually reported to the team's training facility more than three hours late.

Whitehead, 24, has served as the team's primary kick and punt returner this season, averaging 23.8 yards per kickoff return and 8.8 yards per punt return. He's also caught two passes for 40 yards and tallied eight carries for 86 yards this season.

Todd Archer of ESPN.com reported that Cole Beasley would likely return punts for the team Sunday, with Lance Dunbar being the logical option to assume kick-return duties.
