IPTL 2016 Results: Sunday India Tennis Scores, Winners and Schedule

Tom SunderlandDec 11, 2016

Singapore Slammers successfully defended the International Premier Tennis League crown on Sunday, dominating Indian Aces 30-14 to claim the 2016 title at the Hyderabad Gachibowli Indoor Stadium final in India.

Despite their away disadvantage, the Slammers powered their way to successive IPTL trophies thanks to the fine form of stars such as Carlos Moya, Kiki Bertens, Nick Kyrgios and Marcelo Melo.

Moya steered a star-studded Singapore side into an early lead following his 6-4 win over Mark Philippoussis, and Bertens' 6-1 demolition of Kirsten Flipkens ensured the underdogs' momentum was carried over.

However, it wasn't until Melo and Bertens teamed up to embarrass Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza 6-1 in the mixed doubles that the Slammers' victory was effectively sealed, with the Aces failing to win a set across five matches.

The official IPTL Twitter account announced Singapore Slammers as its official 2016 champions following Sunday's mad dash for this year's crown:

Recap

Singapore Slammers came into Sunday's final having finished second to Indian Aces in the standings, four points adrift of the leaders, although that preparation appeared to count for little come the final.

Australian Philippoussis was the Slammers' first victim of the day as an in-form Moya, 40, showcased the advantages of experience and saw his early performance lauded by tennis writer Jake Davies:

Bertens' victory over Belgian contender Flipkens could also have been a lot more embarrassing than the scoreline suggested as the former let a 4-1 lead slip to allow her opponent within two games reaching the climax.

The official IPTL Twitter account confirmed Mirza came in as a late substitute for the struggling Flipkens, although she was unable to prevent Bertens sailing to a 6-3 triumph, revenge for the mixed doubles defeat she suffered to the Indian star on Friday:

Bertens sealed further redemption, too, after teaming up alongside Melo to thrash the Aces pairing of Mirza and Bopanna 6-1 in Hyderabad, despite the fact it was the latter duo who led 1-0 after the opening game.

The Slammers proceeded to win six games in a row without reply, leading Davies to question whether this was the finest we'd seen the Dutch 25-year-old perform, posing questions as to what next year holds for her career:

That result left the Slammers leading 18-8 and meant Indian Aces had to win the men's doubles—and by a large margin—in order to have a hope of reclaiming their 2014 title, except the change in momentum never came.

Kyrgios hadn't always performed to his potential during this tournament, but it was no coincidence a good performance with Melo greatly aided in Singapore's 6-2 hammering of Ivan Dodig and Feliciano Lopez. ESPN India's Gaurav Kalra made particular note of the Australian bad boy's impressive form:

That win pushed the Slammers into a 24-10 lead and meant Marcos Baghdatis was free of any pressure in what became a dead rubber against Lopez, but that didn't prevent the Cypriot winning 6-4 and serving out for a complete whitewash scoreline.

Singapore Slammers have now won two of the three IPTL competitions played and will attempt to complete their hat-trick in 2017, with the latest assembly of tennis stars succeeding in defending their accolade on Sunday.
