Louisville Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson's historic 2016 season earned him the Heisman Trophy on Saturday with 2,144 total points in the voting.

Eric Crawford of WDRB in Louisville, Kentucky, provided the vote totals, which showed a two-man race between Jackson and Clemson Tigers signal-caller Deshaun Watson:

Per Dane Brugler of CBS Sports, Jackson had a commanding edge in first-place votes:

This moment has been written in the stars essentially from the start of the season, though some wondered whether Louisville's dip in performance late in the year would hurt Jackson's case.

ESPN College Football provided the image of Jackson lifting the Heisman Trophy after he was announced as the winner:

Despite a sluggish end to the season in which he had five total turnovers in losses against Houston and Kentucky, there was no denying Jackson's cumulative impact over the course of 12 games.

Instead, things turned out exactly as they were supposed to, with Jackson hoisting the most prestigious individual award in college football.

Per ESPN Stats & Info, Jackson's touchdown totals put him in some impressive company and his win was historical:

Louisville also captured some of the images from its first-ever Heisman winner:

Jackson's head coach at Louisville offered his congratulations to the star quarterback:

In case those numbers weren't enough to remind you of Jackson's greatness, Pro Football Focus' College Football channel offered more numbers to help:

Because Jackson seemingly had the Heisman wrapped up in October, SportsCenter noted gamblers could have contributed to building more casinos in Las Vegas if they wanted to make a bet on his capturing the trophy:

With Jackson taking home the award, ESPN's Jemele Hill gave some love to the woman who raised the star quarterback:

Per Joy Demling of Scout.com, Jackson said during his acceptance speech going to Louisville was the "best decision of my life."

Sticking with the importance of Louisville for Jackson as a person and football player, he gave kudos to his teammates for helping him achieve this success.

"To be able to stand up here with all the former winners, I'm extremely proud to represent this class and Louisville as their first Heisman Trophy winner," said Jackson, per ESPN's Andrea Adelson"For my teammates, it's an award for all of us. I can't wait to cherish it with all of you."

FS1's Skip Bayless offered some quality insight into the top two finishers in this year's Heisman voting:

"The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity," the award's mission statement notes. "The winners of the trophy epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance and hard work."

However, the award often simply goes to the best player on the best team, or at least one of the best teams. The Cardinals fell flat down the stretch, but none of that diminished what Jackson accomplished.

Sometimes a player comes along whose performance is impossible to ignore. Jackson was the best player in college football from the first week of the season, when he accounted for eight total touchdowns against Charlotte.

Three months later, Jackson took his rightful place among the immortals in college football's rich history with the greatest individual honor in the sport.
