Penn State Fan Surprised with Rose Bowl Tickets
Initially confused by a bowl filled with roses, Dean Yockey broke down in tears once he realized he will be going to the Rose Bowl.
"I don't know, it's a rose bowl. What the hell is it?"
According to the Centre Daily Times' Shawn Annarelli, the lifelong Penn State fan talked to his wife Becky about purchasing tickets to the Jan. 2 game against the USC Trojans in Pasadena, California. But since they have four daughters, they decided against the hefty expense:
"Mainly my wife and I talked about it, because she always wanted to go to the Rose Parade and I always wanted to go to the Rose Bowl. We thought it'd be a good thing to do. Then we thought we'd save the money, because you never know what you can save it for. What if the girls get married?
"
Becky bought the tickets anyway and arranged a grand reveal with her daughters. Even through tears of joy, Dean worried about the cost of the trip.
Per Onward State, a student-run Penn State site, Dean later received a call from Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin, who said the team would send a care package to Dean to show its appreciation for his passionate support:
Despite his financial concerns, Dean expressed excitement and gratitude for the gift, per Annarelli.
"Oh, absolutely, I can't wait to go," he said. "And I just want to say I love my family, I love my wife and this is a dream come true. It's really a dream come true.”
