Cal Clutterbuck, Islanders Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Tim DanielsDec 9, 2016

The New York Islanders and forward Cal Clutterbuck reached an agreement Friday on a five-year contract extension to keep the winger with the organization through the 2022-23 season.

New York announced the re-signing on its official website. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported the new deal comes with an annual average value of $3.5 million.

Clutterbuck has scored nine points in 25 games for the Islanders so far during the 2016-17 campaign. He's tallied a total of 36 goals and 31 assists across 251 appearances for the club since coming over in a trade during the 2013 offseason.

The 29-year-old Ontario native is not the type of player usually targeted by a front office for a long-term extension, though.

He spends a vast majority of his time playing on the team's bottom six and isn't much of a scoring threat. His 15 goals last year were boosted by an unsustainable 18.8 shooting percentage. He's on pace to find the net only six times this season.

Clutterbuck doesn't rate favorably in the world of advanced stats, either. He ranks 16th on the Islanders out of 20 qualifiers in Fenwick percentage relative to the team, per HockeyAnalysis.com.

Sportsnet's Dimitri Filipovic doesn't see much value in the new contract:

Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times also questioned the franchise's recent decisions under general manager Garth Snow:

The main arguments in Clutterbuck's favor come from the realm of intangibles. He's leaned on for leadership as one of the Islanders' alternate captains and fills the high-energy role of a fourth-line player, but whether that's worth $17.5 million over five years is definitely up for debate.

Furthermore, NHL Numbers noted New York is scheduled to have several unrestricted free agents over the next few years, led by leading scorer John Tavares. That's where sinking so much money into a fringe asset could come back to hurt the front office.
