Greatest College QB? Tim Tebow Or Charlie Ward
Let me start off by saying out of respect for these 2 QB's they are both great and will be forever remembered throughout college football as revolutionaries of the college football world.
Now for the young people who didn't get to see Charlie Ward play he was a great quarterback he invented the dual threat QB position and changed the game that showed while you may cover every receiver on the field you cannot cover a QB like Charlie Ward. When you put he and Tebow side by side they are really similar QBs but let's be honest Tim Tebow's 1st National Championship wasn't his he was a glorified fullback and it should be credited to Chris Leak. So each quarterback is even at one National Championship a piece and one Heisman trophy let's break this debate down a little better.
Since Tebow is in our minds fresh he is going to win a lot of votes but those who remember playing Charlie Ward, like Notre Dame, will tell you he was faster than #15 and a better passer than Tebow as well. Let's be honest the majority or the Tebow's passes look like they should be shot out of the sky with a Remington 870 shot gun, he has world class athletes like Percy Harvin, Louis Murphy, Aaron Hernandez, and Brandon James around him to make him look better, and he also has a system in the spread offense which makes it harder to bring pressure on Tim Tebow because you don't want Brandon James to dart past one of your linebackers.
Charlie Ward on the other hand had no great WR's no true help or play makers aside from Warrick Dunn. He ran a pro-style offense and actually took snaps from under the center. He had to read defenses, he had to worry about the blitz on a regular basis and he believe it or not could throw a spiral. Now while I respect Tebow for all he has done and all the hits he takes, he is starting to show some of his vulnerability without his huge play making WR's. Now even though Heisman trophy winner Charlie Ward chose to pursue a successful basketball career I think he would've made a nice NFL quarterback.
While we wait to see how Tim Tebow's NFL career works out I am just not so sure he possesses the mechanics, quick release nor footwork for the NFL and I think it's safe to say if Byron Leftwich's release is shorter than yours you might just want to cut down on that wind up, this isn't baseball but maybe you would give Roger Clemens a run for his money.
