Classic Analysis
There's already been a shakeup in this year's Breeders' Cup, as it was revealed this past Saturday that Nyquist, the 2016 Kentucky Derby winner, will not be racing after suffering an ankle injury, forcing an early retirement for the horse, according to Jay Privman of Daily Racing Form.
"He jogs sound and the X-rays are clean," trainer Doug O'Neill said Saturday morning. "But with the timing, he can't make the Classic. We're bummed and sad."
It's an unfortunate withdrawal for the horse who was supposed to challenge California Chrome this year, but now it looks like the field's talent pool has been diminished a bit, and a true challenger to California Chrome will be hard to find.
California Chrome's competition in the Classic includes the likes of Arrogate, Frosted, Found and Highland Reel, but it's unlikely that any of those horses can challenge the world's No. 1-ranked horse, per Daily Racing Form.
California Chrome is undefeated in 2016, going 6-0. He should, and will, be 7-0 at the end of the Breeders' Cup.
