WWE NXT Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from October 26

Erik BeastonOct 26, 2016

The Dusty Rhodes Classic tag team tournament may have taken center stage, with two high-profile matches on this week's show, but it was the announcement of a huge championship encounter for TakeOver: Toronto that dominated headlines.

Mickie James appeared on WWE programming for the first time since 2010, as she was revealed as Asuka's opponent, the brand's latest hope in dethroning the Empress of Tomorrow as the top star in women's wrestling.

The continuation of the Tye Dillinger-Bobby Roode feud and Billie Kay and Peyton Royce's quest for dominance rounded out the latest episode of the brand's WWE Network broadcast.

Now, find out everything that went down, how it graded out and how it will affect those involved going forward with this look back at the October 26 show.

DIY vs. HoHo Lun and Tian Bing

1 of 5

Tian Bing, the first Chinese star in WWE history, made his NXT debut Wednesday night, as he teamed with HoHo Lun to battle DIY's Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano.

Commentator Tom Phillips put Bing over as a big deal, but it was Gargano and Ciampa who controlled the majority of the match.

After a brief portion of control by the opposition, Gargano made a hot tag to Ciampa, who exploded in to the ring and plastered Lun with a stiff clothesline. A spear by Gargano and running knee/kick combination scored the win for the former No. 1 contenders.

Result

DIY defeated HoHo Lun and Tian Bing

Grade

C+

Analysis

The match was laid out perfectly in that it allowed Bing to get in some basic offense but never let him look overmatched or out of his league, which he most certainly was.

Lun carried the action for his team, but in the end, the superior team won, setting up what should be an outstanding, brilliant tag team wrestling match between DIY and The Revival in Round 2.

Aliyah vs. Billie Kay

2 of 5

Kay and Royce looked to continue their quest toward domination in the women's division Wednesday night as the former squared off with Aliyah, who Phillips suggested is working hard to get on the TakeOver: Toronto card seeing as how it will take place in her hometown.

Kay dominated Aliyah, using her size and strength to overwhelm her opponent early. Aliyah fired off with a series of forearms and a rolling neckbreaker of sorts to wrest control of the bout. An enzuigiri appeared to have Aliyah en route to an upset, but a big forearm cut her offense off.

Liv Morgan appeared at ringside, attacking Royce and allowing Aliyah to score an upset win over Kay.

After the match, the heels laid the young rookies out to a chorus of boos from the NXT faithful.

Result

Aliyah defeated Billie Kay

Grade

C

Analysis

The match itself was rushed and somewhat sloppy, even if both women showed enough to suggest a longer match might surpass expectations.

The post-match activities did enough to drum up interest in a potential tag team feud, and the fans' reaction suggests that they buy the heels in their roles of the bullies of the NXT women's division. Now whether Creative can effectively build Aliyah and Morgan to effective babyface heroines remains to be seen.

Noah Potjes vs. Tye Dillinger

3 of 5

Phillips and Corey Graves put Noah Potjes over as a creep in the WWE Performance Center while selling Dillinger's ongoing beef with Roode.

A motivated Dillinger tore through Potjes and finished him off with The Tye Breaker in short order.

The Perfect 10 stopped on the ramp for a brief interview but found himself attacked by Roode, beaten down and left lying by the former TNA world champion. An impaler DDT left the cult hero unconscious on the top of the ramp and Roode standing tall over him.

Result

Tye Dillinger defeated Noah Potjes

Grade

B-

Analysis

Rarely is Dillinger the aggressor in a squash match in NXT, so to see him switch roles was certainly welcome.

The match was meaningless, a completely forgettable squash, but the post-match angle was strong and added heat to what is developing into one of the better-built matches on the TakeOver: Toronto card.

Thea Trinidad vs. Asuka

4 of 5

Thea Trinidad, longtime indy competitor and former TNA competitor Rosita, had a tall test in front of her in the form of NXT women's champion Asuka.

The titleholder unloaded on her opponent, trapping her in the ankle lock, then tossing her with a German suplex. An armbar followed, and Trinidad had no choice but to tap out.

Result

Asuka defeated Thea Trinidad

Grade

C

Analysis

Asuka tore through Trinidad in a more one-sided beatdown than expected, making the former TNA star look like a relative newcomer in the sport.

The revelation after the fact that the champion will defend against James in Toronto was strong and elevates the importance of the title at a time when the competition is relatively weak.

The crowd's reaction to the revelation was outstanding and drummed up more interest in the upcoming contest, even if the outcome is fairly predictable.

T.J. Perkins and Kota Ibushi vs. Mustafa Ali and Lince Dorado

5 of 5

Cruiserweight champion T.J. Perkins joined Kota Ibushi, replacing Hideo Itami, as they battled Lince Dorado and Mustafa Ali.

Surprisingly enough, it was Perkins who took the heat for the fan favorites, worn down by Ali and Dorado as the audience anxiously awaited the hot tag to Ibushi. The Japanese sensation eventually exploded into the match and wasted little time breaking out a moonsault, followed by a frog splash from Perkins.

Perkins eventually forced the tapout from Ali via the kneebar.

Result

T.J. Perkins and Kota Ibushi defeated Mustafa Ali and Lince Dorado

Grade

B+

Analysis

A fun cruiserweight tag match, the likes of which should happen on Raw every week. Instead, it was a nice reminder of what the talent involved is capable of with time and a hot crowd.

The right team advanced, though it is difficult to foresee a situation where they advance past the next round given their opponents are newcomers Sanity.
