New Day vs. Cesaro and Sheamus: Winner and Reaction from WWE Hell in a Cell 2016

Mike ChiariOct 30, 2016

Cesaro and Sheamus overcame their differences to beat The New Day on Sunday night at Hell in a Cell, but they did not end their 400-plus-day reign as WWE Raw tag team champions due to the DQ finish.

WrestlingINC.com broke down how the match ended:

WWE Universe captured Cesaro and Sheamus' reaction after realizing they would not become the new tag team champions:

Cesaro tweeted a brief message after the loss:

After vanquishing Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson in a feud that lasted several weeks, the triumvirate of Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods was in need of new challengers for the titles it had captured more than one year ago.

An unlikely pairing emerged in the form of Cesaro and Sheamus, who previously did battle in a best-of-seven series.

Their series ended in a draw when neither Superstar was able to continue at Clash of Champions, which prompted Raw general manager Mick Foley to rule that they could each have a title shot, but it would have to be as a tag team.

The Swiss Superman and The Celtic Warrior resisted at first due to their dislike for each other, but they eventually agreed to go after the Raw Tag Team Championships.

Despite winning multiple matches against enhancement talent during the build toward Hell in a Cell, Cesaro and Sheamus were far from being on the same page, as they often attempted to one-up each other rather than focus on teamwork.

In fact, their lack of synergy was on full display when Sheamus ignored his partner's one-on-one match with Kingston on Raw:

Cesaro and Sheamus had plenty of problems in their own right, and New Day didn't make life any easier for them by poking fun at the odd couple.

They were especially brutal when describing their disdain for Sheamus, who they previously feuded with when he was part of the League of Nations, as seen in this photo courtesy of WWE Universe:

While Cesaro and Sheamus entered Hell in a Cell at a huge disadvantage due to their dysfunction, WWE has a long history of strange duos enjoying success in the tag team ranks. The Rock 'n' Sock Connection and Team Hell No stand out as prime examples.

Because of that and the fact that Cesaro and Sheamus are both talented Superstars individually, New Day had to be cautious and couldn't afford to let overconfidence creep in.

Having held the Tag Team Championships for more than 400 days entering Hell in a Cell, New Day proved on numerous occasions it is capable of focusing on the task at hand and putting the comedy aside when needed.

Despite that, the team came out on the losing end Sunday, which means its role as the pre-eminent tag team on Raw is in jeopardy.

Although both New Day and the team of Cesaro and Sheamus figure to be part of a traditional elimination match at Survivor Series next month, Sunday's result suggests a rematch between them is forthcoming, and it wouldn't be too surprising to see New Day gain retribution against Cesaro and Sheamus on Raw in the coming weeks.
