Why the Redskins can cover the spread

Despite some early struggles on the field and inside the locker room, Washington is right back in the mix as the defending NFC East champions and does not have to travel far to play Baltimore.

That should work in favor of the Redskins here along with the fact that the they have gone an impressive 6-1 straight up and against the spread in their past seven games as underdogs, according to the Odds Shark NFL Database.

Why the Ravens can cover the spread

Washington has played better lately, but it is hard to take too much from the team's win over Cleveland, the last of the winless teams in the league after the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints all won last week.

The Redskins blew an early 14-0 lead against the Browns and actually trailed 20-17 entering the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Ravens have excelled recently off a loss under head coach John Harbaugh as well, going 34-14 SU over their last 48 games in that situation.

Smart pick

Baltimore was one of five undefeated teams left in the NFL before losing to Oakland but figures to bounce back in this spot against a Washington team that has lost five of six versus teams with winning records. The one win during that stretch for the Redskins came two weeks ago when they upset the previously unbeaten New York Giants 29-27 as 3.5-point road underdogs.

We all saw how bad the Giants are when they lost to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, and Harbaugh and the Ravens acted quickly in trying to improve team chemistry by letting running back Justin Forsett go on Tuesday, as first reported Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. The Ravens are a better team than Washington and will prove it with an easy win and cover.

Betting trends

The total has gone under in four of the Redskins' last five games against the Ravens.

The Ravens are 34-14 SU in their last 48 games after a loss.

The Ravens are 2-12-2 ATS in their last 16 games as favorite.
