WWE Rumors: Examining Latest Buzz Around Women's Title, Roderick Strong and More

Erik BeastonOct 4, 2016

On Monday's WWE Raw, Sasha Banks and Charlotte battled over the Raw Women's Championship in the main event, an honor bestowed only upon Lita and Trish Stratus before them.

On the heels of their historic battle and The Boss' championship triumph, news broke Tuesday regarding an even more historic bout between the two.

They were not the only competitors in the news this week, though.

Former Ring of Honor star Roderick Strong was at the center of buzz, his name brought up in discussion surrounding an upcoming tournament.

Finally, Alberto Del Rio remained in the news, at the center of controversy following a missed booking over the weekend.

Sasha Banks and Charlotte To Enter Hell?

Less than 12 hours after defeating Charlotte to capture the Raw Women's Championship, Sasha Banks' title celebration was overshadowed by a report from Dave Meltzer and Wrestling Observer Radio that the two women have one last match left in their long-running rivalry.

According to Meltzer, Banks will defend the title against Charlotte inside Hell in a Cell, the signature match of the October 30 pay-per-view extravaganza.

If the report holds true, it will trump any accomplishment the female Superstars of WWE have achieved to this point.

Long considered the one match that brought an end to the most intense rivalries in the wrestling world, the contest has never housed a single female competitor, let alone two engaged in a heated feud that ranks as one of the premier ones in WWE.

It is a testament to the quality of Charlotte and Banks' work that they have been chosen for the match, if the early reports carry weight.

Roderick Strong, NXT and The Dusty Rhodes Classic

Roderick Strong is one of the franchise stars of Ring of Honor, a competitor who helped that promotion gain national recognition and the epitome of what that brand expects from its in-ring competitors. That is why his departure from ROH earlier this year was a surprise to so many.

A new report by Meltzer over at F4WOnline suggests the man formerly known as "Mr. ROH" will be headed to NXT, where he will make an immediate impact.

"WWE announced Austin Aries will be in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic this year, with a mystery partner. This is not a sure thing, but the speculation has it that this will be Roderick Strong's debut."

"Speculation" is the surest thing from certainty, but it does provide a little insight to fans about Strong's landing spot. Though he is one of the best in-ring workers on the planet, he is not a wrestler primed and ready for the main roster.

He needs to discover himself from a character perspective; being a great professional wrestler is simply not enough to garner the following he would need to succeed or the support from management necessary to thrive in the promotion.

Just ask Cesaro.

Alberto Del Rio and the Curious Case of the Missed AAA Event

Alberto Del Rio was scheduled to compete Saturday, October 2, for Mexican-based promotion Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion (AAA). He no-showed the event, and AAA was none too thrilled, per Cageside Seats.

Just 24 hours later, F4WOnline reported that Del Rio was stabbed en route to the show, and the former WWE champion confirmed with a few graphic photos on his Instagram account (warning: NSFW).

On Tuesday morning, AAA released a statement in support of Del Rio (transcribed by F4WOnline):

"

Mr. Rodriguez (“Alberto El Patron”) shortly after eating a meal before his flight was assaulted by a criminal with a knife outside the restaurant. Mr. Rodriguez suffered multiple lacerations on his arm and other parts of his body defending against the criminal as Police were called by witnesses. Mr. Rodriguez received medical attention and went back to the Police Department and was unable to make his flight.

Mr. Rodriguez has spoken with the ownership of Lucha Libre AAA WorldWide and given them the documentation of the incident. Mr. Rodriguez greatly regrets not being there yesterday for his fans in Mexico and promises to everyone he will make this up as soon as possible. Despite the graphic lacerations Mr. Rodriguez will not miss any of his shows for the remainder of the year and is ready to compete this weekend in the UK.

"

The ordeal is yet another interesting addition to Del Rio's whirlwind 2016, which included mounting frustration in WWE, an off-screen relationship with Paige and his official departure from the company at which he won four world titles.
