Justin Forsett Cut by Ravens: Latest Comments and Reaction

Tim DanielsOct 4, 2016

The Baltimore Ravens released running back Justin Forsett on Tuesday after he was inactive for Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun first reported Forsett had been informed of the team's decision to let him go Tuesday morning. Clifton Brown of CSN Mid-Atlantic confirmed the roster move, adding Forsett had a feeling the change might be coming after sitting out Sunday.

Forsett also posted a message on social media Tuesday:

The Ravens previously released Forsett in early September before re-signing him two days later. Ryan Mink of the team's official website passed along comments Forsett made on The Lounge, a Ravens podcast, about the difficulty of those situations:

"

It's always tough when you get those calls and you've got to talk to your parents and say, 'I'm getting released, but don't worry, it's supposed to work out.' You've got to go home and talk to your wife and try to explain it. It's still tough even though you have trust in the guys handling the business. It's still a tough pill to swallow.

"

He asked general manager Ozzie Newsome for the move Tuesday in order to explore other opportunities where he'd be more involved in the offense, per Mink.

"It was mutual," Forsett said. "I felt like my opportunity here was closing. I'm at a phase in my career where I don't want to sit; I want to play. I have a lot of football left in me."

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the Ravens tried to trade Forsett last week but moved on after they were unable to complete a deal.

Forsett failed to make much of an impact after getting a second chance with the team. He racked up just 98 yards on 31 carries (3.2 yards per carry) through the first three games.

The 30-year-old veteran lacked the burst he displayed en route to 1,529 total yards and eight touchdowns during his breakout 2014 campaign. He already showed signs of a drop-off last year, when he finished the season with just 641 rushing yards in 10 games.

Although Forsett's stint with the organization is ending unceremoniously, Luke Jones of WNST.net pointed out the importance of his prior contributions:

With that said, the Ravens have decided to move forward with younger options at the position. Terrance West, 25, has taken over as the starter, and Javorius "Buck" Allen (also 25) will move into the backup role. Rookie Kenneth Dixon is also expected back in Week 5 after being sidelined with an injury, per Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

The triumvirate shouldn't have any trouble handling the rushing workload without Forsett. Baltimore will likely ease Dixon into the rotation as he gets up to full speed, but the Louisiana Tech product has a great chance to carve out a key role or the starting role by season's end.

Meanwhile, Forsett's desire to play a more regular role may lead him to wait for the right opportunity before signing elsewhere. While he's lost some of his explosiveness, he could still be a nice depth addition when a team suffers a backfield injury during the season.
