WWE SmackDown: Potential Spoilers, News and Preview for October 4

Ryan DilbertOct 4, 2016

Challengers will surround AJ Styles on WWE SmackDown as the world champ prepares for a daunting title defense.

Chaos is a certainty on Tuesday night as rivals get within striking distance of each other. Styles will step into the same ring as John Cena and Dean Ambrose, the two men vying for his WWE World Championship at the No Mercy pay-per-view on Oct. 9.

That event will be the focus of Tuesday's SmackDown as WWE will hype Randy Orton's battle with the monstrous Bray Wyatt, Alexa Bliss' attempt to dethrone Becky Lynch and what could be Dolph Ziggler's final match.

San Diego will host all the in-ring action and verbal collisions.

Can WWE get fans pumped about a PPV lodged into an overloaded part of the calendar? What bouts will the company add to No Mercy? Will Curt Hawkins ever actually debut?

The go-home edition of SmackDown will answer those questions starting at 8 p.m. ET on the USA Network. Twitter, internet buzz and the SmackDown preview on WWE.com offer a glimpse of what to expect on Tuesday night.

News, Potential Spoilers

SmackDown general manager Daniel Bryan is on the hunt for more star power.

Bryan reached out to Cesaro on Twitter to inquire about potentially bringing him over to the blue brand:

The King of Swing is in line to take on The New Day for the Tag Team Championship, but Bryan's public talent search could be part of a developing storyline. Fans will have to keep an eye out for surprise guests who Bryan recruits to SmackDown.

Natalya left her tag team match in Las Vegas on Saturday with a brand-new look:

As Maxim detailed, Natalya lost two front teeth during house-show action over the weekend. Dentists were able to repair the damage, however.

Hawkins, who has been featured in return vignettes for weeks, looks to finally be on his way. He competed for WWE at a pair of live events over the weekend, per the Internet Wrestling Database.

This was the first time he has wrestled for WWE since a dark match in September, and before that, during his last run in 2014.

SmackDown Streaks

Bliss heads into her Women's Championship match against Lynch at No Mercy with a growing supply of momentum.

WWE has worked to build her as a top contender. Per CageMatch.net, Bliss is on a three-match winning streak on SmackDown that stretches back to Aug. 30. Should she step into the ring on Tuesday night, it's a safe bet she will add to that total.

Chad Gable and Jason Jordan of American Alpha are suddenly headed in the opposite direction.

After beginning their run on SmackDown as unstoppable newcomers, WWE has since cooled them off. The Ascension and The Usos knocked off Gable, Jordan, Heath Slater and Rhyno last week. As seen on CageMatch.net, that was the former NXT tag champs' second loss in a row.

They began 6-0 to start their SmackDown tenure. Their rivalry with The Usos has upended them for the moment, but one would expect the babyfaces to dish out payback before long.

Last Stages of No Mercy Build

Wyatt vs. Orton took a strange turn last Tuesday.

Orton traveled into Wyatt's smoke-filled lair, followed signs The Eater of Worlds left behind and eventually slipped on a sheep mask as he chased off Wyatt.

These two are sure to cross paths again before they collide at No Mercy. Chances are WWE Creative keeps things outside the box.

The women's division promises to feature heavily on Tuesday's show, too.

Bliss and Lynch have a title match to hype. Carmella and Nikki Bella's bad blood is sure to spill over again, and it looks as if WWE wants to include SmackDown's other female wrestlers in the mix.

The SmackDown preview on WWE.com stated, "One must be careful not to turn her back on the likes of Naomi or Natalya—or they might just end up paying a very painful price."

That sounds like a hint of that duo working their way into the spotlight somehow. If they don't get lumped into the Carmella-Bella feud, then their options are limited as Eva Marie is the only one left in the division without a storyline.

Ziggler's pursuit of The Miz and the Intercontinental Championship transformed into something far more compelling last week. The Showoff agreed to put his career on the line at No Mercy to assure himself another title opportunity.

The Miz should be beaming now that he is potentially days away from retiring Ziggler. The irritant champ is sure to hang that possibility over his rival's head.

WWE.com's SmackDown preview asked, "What will Miz do to antagonize him now that the match is set in stone?"

Ambrose pinned Cena two weeks ago. Cena then caused a distraction that cost Ambrose a shot at reclaiming the world title a week later. Per the SmackDown preview, those two will face off with the man holding the gold they want so badly.

Things are sure to break down. After all, WWE has a main event to hype.

That means the trash-talking session is sure to devolve into violence, leaving fans with a lasting image of fists flying just before No Mercy.
