Eddie Alvarez Dismisses Conor McGregor: "I've Never Felt so Unthreatened'

Steven RondinaOct 3, 2016

Eddie Alvarez isn't going to lie and say his fight with Conor McGregor is going to be an exciting battle between amazing competitors. No, Alvarez feels like this is going to be the easiest fight of his career.

Speaking with MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Alvarez completely dismissed McGregor's chances at UFC 205.

"Usually when square [sic] off with a man, my heart rate goes up, I feel something," Alvarez told Helwani (h/t MMAFighting.com's Dave Doyle). "I never felt so unthreatened by a human being as when I was up on a stage with him. That's the God's honest truth. I've never felt so unthreatened."

Alvarez is referring to last week's UFC 205 press conference, which saw the show's main eventers going back and forth with smack talk throughout. As per usual, the festivities ended with the headliners facing off, but while McGregor put on his best mean mug, Alvarez laughed in McGregor's face as soon as they came close.

Why is Alvarez giving so little respect to a fighter who owns wins over Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes, Max Holloway, Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier? "They have a well-rounded skill set...they're well versed, to the point where they can hang with some of the toughest guys in the world in any aspect of the sport," said Alvarez, comparing McGregor to his past competition. "And I don't think [McGregor] can, from what I've seen."

While Alvarez sees no challenge in McGregor, betting outlets tend to disagree, with the odds showing Alvarez to be a +110 underdog at this time, per Odds Shark. Pundits, meanwhile, question how well Alvarez's suspect chin will hold up against a powerful puncher like McGregor.

Ultimately, the speculation will end on November 12. It will be fun to see who gets the last laugh between the two.
