St. Louis Cardinals Beat Cincinnati Reds Via Controversial Walk-Off

Zac WassinkSep 29, 2016

The St. Louis Cardinals notched an important, yet controversial, 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium on Thursday night.

With the game tied 3-3 and Matt Carpenter standing on first, representing the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina smashed a line drive to left field. The ball hopped off the wall, and Carpenter scored the game-winning run.

It now appears, however, the run shouldn't have counted.

The ball appeared to bounce off a sign above the wall. In that case, the play should've been ruled a ground-rule double, putting Carpenter at third base:

The outcome directly affects the postseason race in the National League. St. Louis trails San Francisco by a half-game for the second wild-card spot.
