WWE Raw: Burning Questions to Address After Sept. 26 Show

Ryan DilbertSep 27, 2016

Sheamus and Cesaro teamed up on WWE Raw, leaving the audience unsure whether championship gold or an implosion is in their future.

It's fair to question the longevity of an alliance made up of two warriors who have spent the past month trying to destroy each other. After failing to decide a winner in their smashmouth best-of-seven series, The Celtic Warrior and Cesaro are partners—for now.

Monday's Raw left fans wondering what lies ahead for that duo, the makeup of the cruiserweight division, Kevin Owens' Universal Championship reign and Sasha Banks' title hopes.

Will Kevin Owens Be Overshadowed as Champion?

On paper, Owens is the top beast in the WWE food chain. That hasn't held true in practice during the early stages of the universal champion's reign.

Owens' current narrative is one that includes him, rather than one built around him. He holds the universal title due to Triple H betraying Seth Rollins, and much of The Architect's airtime since has seen him bicker with Raw's authority figures.

The guys at Busted Open radio pointed that out during Monday's Raw:

There continue to be questions about whether Stephanie McMahon is involved in a Triple H-centered conspiracy against Rollins.

Much of the talk after Clash of Champions was about McMahon getting into a limo with The Game after seemingly shafting Rollins in the main event. Raw general manager Mick Foley doubted McMahon on Monday night, earning himself a verbal undressing.

All of that has little to do with Owens.

As the champ's best friend, Chris Jericho has earned plenty of spotlight, too. He hosted a Highlight Reel segment near the close of Monday's Raw. When Enzo Amore and Big Cass emerged to confront the heels, Jericho was often the focus of the exchange, with Owens standing quietly at his side.

It hasn't gotten to the point where Jericho is pushing Owens to the background, but WWE Creative cannot let that happen moving forward.

And things will get even more complicated once Triple H returns to explain himself. Rollins could easily be more concerned about revenge against him than tangling with KO.

WWE has a number of subplots to juggle right now. It's a difficult task to balance it all, but this can work; the company just has to remember to tell Owens' side of the story.

Are the New Cruiserweights Here to Stay?

The cruiserweight division is a fluid entity at the moment.

We know that T.J. Perkins is the division's champ and that a number of wrestlers from the Cruiserweight Classic tournament are now a part of the Raw brand. But WWE also looks to be testing the waters with additional talent.

On Monday's show, Drew Gulak teamed up with Lince Dorado to take on Rich Swann and Cedric Alexander. Tony Nese, meanwhile, collided with Perkins in non-title action.

Neither Gulak nor Nese is listed as an official member of Raw on WWE.com. PWInsider.com's Mike Johnson reported there is "no word yet" on either Superstar signing with the company.

For now, it appears they are free agents pulled from the CWC for a test run with the red brand. Continuing this strategy will add variety to the division, but it will make it harder to introduce all these new faces to casual fans.

WWE has a whole sub-world to unveil within Raw, even without Nese and Gulak aboard full-time.

Nese made sure he made ample impact with his opportunity, though. He outperformed Perkins and looked like a similarly impressive combo of power and speed as Neville.

Is Sasha Banks Poised to Reclaim Her Crown?

WWE may be ready to push the restart button on Banks' title reign.

Less than a month after The Boss dethroned Charlotte on Raw, concerns over a back injury emerged, and Banks dropped the belt at SummerSlam. Now healthy and ready to be the division's top star again, Banks may be closing in on her second reign.

On Monday's Raw, Charlotte gloated about her win at Clash of Champions. Banks soon stepped in and promised to take her title back.

WWE then announced that Banks will challenge Charlotte next week in Los Angeles.

Are we set to see history repeat itself? Will Banks go back to where she was in July?

That's a distinct possibility. Charlotte has been champion for a long time. According to WWE.com, she was Divas champ for 196 days before WWE replaced that title with the Women's Championship, which The Queen held on to for another 114 days.

It isn't hard to imagine that WWE wants to switch things up.

Plus, Charlotte and her protege, Dana Brooke, appear to be moments from splitting. That feud would then open the door for Bayley to climb the ranks and build on her longstanding rivalry with Banks.

How Long Will the Cesaro-Sheamus Partnership Last?

After beating each other until the referees simply had to call off the action, Cesaro and Sheamus are now a reluctant tag team.

Foley struggled to choose a winner of their best-of-seven series when the seventh match went to a no-contest at Clash of Champions. On Monday's Raw, he then told the two bruisers that they would both get a title opportunity—as a pair.

As expected, the two bickered backstage and nearly came to blows in their victory over two enhancement talents.

Is this alliance going to implode soon after its inception? Or has WWE found a home for Cesaro and Sheamus for a long stretch?

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com is a fan of the unlikely duo:

Their animosity and the odd-couple complexion of the team is sure to leave others feeling the same way. The Celtic Warrior's and The King of Swing's similar physical styles make them a natural fit for each other. WWE may run with this.

It's not as if either man had much going on. The Universal Championship picture is plenty crowded with a supporting cast surrounding champion and challenger. Roman Reigns isn't likely to drop the United States title anytime soon.

Joining forces will instead give Cesaro and Sheamus a realistic chance of becoming champions. It will also give the tag team division the boost it has long needed.
