Thomas Robinson to Lakers: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Rob GoldbergSep 21, 2016

The Los Angeles Lakers added depth to their frontcourt Wednesday, agreeing to sign power forward Thomas Robinson to a one-year deal, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.

Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders added Robinson's contract will be non-guaranteed.

The former No. 5 overall draft pick played in 71 games for the Brooklyn Nets last season, averaging 4.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.

Robinson is already somewhat of a journeyman after only four years in the NBA. After being selected by the Sacramento Kings in the 2012 draft, he played just 51 games before being traded to the Houston Rockets. The next summer he was dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers before being flipped once again to the Denver Nuggets.

After being waived by Denver, he tried to get on with the Philadelphia 76ers and eventually the Nets.

In this stretch he played 265 games (11 starts) while averaging 4.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

Despite the wild ride at the start of his career, the 25-year-old player still has plenty of potential as a 6'10" forward with athleticism and a good motor. He has performed well, when given a chance, averaging 12.7 rebounds per 36 minutes in his career.

Portland guard C.J. McCollum also provided an endorsement due to his effort off the court, per Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders:

"

T-Rob is a guy I connected with right away because of his work ethic and passion for the game. I remember going to the gym after midnight on multiple occasions and seeing him in there working out with his trainer and our video coordinator. He is a great competitor and fearless rebounder. I think he can help every team in this league with his skill set and motor. He just needs to get the right opportunity.

"

Robinson will now battle for minutes in a rotation that already features a number of players at power forward. Julius Randle will likely be the Lakers' starter at the 4, although Larry Nance Jr., Ivica Zubac, Yi Jianlian and Metta World Peace could also take away playing time in the frontcourt.
