Fantasy Football Week 6: Updated Trade Value for Top 100 Players

Timothy RappOct 13, 2016

This is a crucial time in the fantasy football season. Now is the time when you take stock of your team, identify your weaknesses and decide which positions you can bolster and which players you can dangle in trade talks to make those improvements.

Fantasy titles have been won and lost in November. Sometimes, the difference between a great owner and a good one is knowing when to keep the team you have and when you need to shake things up and improve via trade.

If you find yourself in the latter camp, I've prepared my weekly trade value chart to assist you in getting fair value. Let's take a look.

Generally, I would tell you to stockpile as many talented running backs as possible on your roster. With injury possibilities and running back committees, you rarely can have too many talented players at the position.

But there is one player posting elite fantasy numbers that I'm a bit wary of so far this season, and thus, you might want to entertain the notion of selling him high.

I'm talking, of course, about Melvin Gordon.

Let's break down the positives and negatives of Mr. Gordon.

The largest positive is that the San Diego Chargers lost playmakers in Danny Woodhead and Keenan Allen, meaning the team has had to rely heavily on Gordon. The result has been 103 total touches, 421 yards from scrimmage, seven touchdowns and 11 or more fantasy points in every game this season.

So why be worried?

Well, for starters, Gordon has lost a fumble in two straight games. He's also rushing for a disappointing 3.4 yards per carry. And his seven touchdowns represent 56 percent of his fantasy value. Compare that to fantasy's top running back, David Johnson, whose five touchdowns represent 38 percent of his fantasy production.

Which of those two numbers seems more sustainable?

Johnson's rate, of course. Put another way, Gordon is on pace to score 22 touchdowns this season. Only 14 players in NFL history (non-quarterbacks) have scored 22 touchdowns in a season, and just two players (LaDainian Tomlinson scored 31 in 2006, Randy Moss scored 23 in 2007) have scored that many in the past 10 years.

Suffice to say, Gordon's touchdown rate isn't sustainable. And if his fumble issues and woeful yards per carry continue, he could find himself losing touches.

For now, he's safe, as Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweeted:

But of all the top running backs, Gordon is the most worrisome, which means trading him high may not be a bad idea. Here are some of the packages you might be able to get in return for Gordon:

  • Rob Gronkowski and Victor Cruz
  • Greg Olsen and Jeremy Maclin
  • Matt Ryan and Travis Benjamin
  • Ben Roethlisberger and Stefon Diggs
  • Jimmy Graham and Andrew Luck

Some folks might already be wary of Gordon and won't give up that much in return. Other players might be willing to spend more on a player who has been a top-five running back to this point. Regardless, it seems unlikely that Gordon's value will get any higher this season. So if you are inclined to deal him, do so now.

Beyond that, Week 5 didn't offer too many startling revelations. But here are a few of my random thoughts for you to consider while pitching trades:

  • The Atlanta Falcons' Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman are both RB1s this season. They are the rare platoon that doesn't dramatically lessen either player's fantasy impact.
  • If the Los Angeles Rams don't continue to get Todd Gurley involved in the passing game, he won't finish as an RB1 this season. That running game is struggling mightily.
  • Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has four games of 21 or more fantasy points in standard leagues and two studs at wide receiver in Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. He's a legitimate QB1 moving forward.
  • Chicago Bears running back Jordan Howard has played well since taking over the starting role. I don't see him losing it even when Jeremy Langford returns from injury. And with Kevin White on the injured reserve list and Alshon Jeffery struggling, Howard should continue to be a major focal point of the team's offense.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Sammie Coates is a player to keep an eye on. He seems to be playing the Martavis Bryant role alongside Antonio Brown, giving the team a dangerous deep threat. With a 25-point game, three games of seven or more fantasy points and five games of at least five fantasy points under his belt, Coates seems like an important part of Pittsburgh's offense.

So there you have it, folks. As always, may the fantasy points be with you.
