Luka Modric, Real Madrid Agree New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
Real Madrid have agreed a new four-year contract with star midfielder Luka Modric, meaning the Croatia international is committed to the Santiago Bernabeu club until 2020.
The 31-year-old’s decision to extend his stay was confirmed via the club's official website.
Modric made the switch to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2012 and has been a roaring success in the Spanish capital.
Here is a look back at some of his best moments in the iconic all-white jersey:
Modric follows Toni Kroos in committing his future to the club; Agence France-Presse's Kieran Canning expects more elite names to follow the midfield duo's lead:
While players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema typically take up most of the column inches in Madrid, those who watch Los Blancos frequently will attest to the importance of the Croatian midfielder.
Indeed, whenever Modric has been missing, Real are never quite as efficient in their play. The midfielder is at the hub of this team, whether taking the ball in tight areas, jinking past defenders with his impeccable balance or managing the course of a contest with his slick passing range.
Per Bleacher Report UK, he's the man who makes this Madrid side function with his mastery in the middle of the park:
In addition, there’s a steel to Modric that’s developed playing at the base of the Madrid midfield.
Modric is the linchpin in this side, and he’s a huge favourite among the Madrid fans, as noted by ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan:
Needless to say, they will be delighted to see the player sign on for four more years. Modric may be approaching the latter stages of his career, but he’s still playing with a vibrancy and bite that few players in world football can match.
The player himself will be hungry to achieve more under the guidance of manager Zinedine Zidane, too, who was a wonderful midfielder in his heyday. Already, Modric has secured two UEFA Champions League wins with Madrid, and with this contract signed, surely more silverware will follow for one of the game’s most underrated operators.
