Pirates P Trevor Williams Shares Emotional Moment with Family After MLB Debut

Kyle NewportSep 8, 2016

Making a major league debut is an unforgettable experience for any baseball player.

Picking up the win in your first appearance in the bigs? Now that's a storybook start for any pitcher, starter or reliever. It's safe to say that Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Trevor Williams is living the dream right now.

On Tuesday, Pittsburgh, among other transactions, selected the contract of the 24-year-old right-hander. It would not take long for the former second-round pick to take the field.

Trying to snap an eight-game losing streak, the Pirates turned to Williams in the sixth inning of Wednesday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals to try to protect a 3-2 lead. The first batter he faced in the majors reached second base on an error and eventually came around to score to tie the game, but it would be a  special night for the young pitcher.

Williams allowed just the one unearned run in three innings of work. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Pittsburgh scored the go-ahead run to put the rookie in line for his first major league win, which he would get when Pirates closer Tony Watson came in and slammed the door shut in the ninth.

After the game, Williams shared a special moment with his family. All the time and hard work that everyone in the family (not just Trevor) put in to make the pitcher's dreams come true had finally paid off. And the Williams family had a hard time keeping its emotions in check at that point.

Williams should certainly relish the accomplishment, but with the Pirates fighting for their playoff lives, he will need to be at the ready when the team calls on him next.
