Arsenal Transfer News: Jack Wilshere Contract Talks Reported Amid Exit Rumours

Rory MarsdenSep 6, 2016

Jack Wilshere has reportedly held talks over signing a new three-year deal with Arsenal despite previous indications that his season-long loan at Bournemouth could spell the end of his career at the Emirates Stadium.

According to the Sun's Daniel Cutts, the 24-year-old has had positive talks with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about extending his stay with the Gunners beyond the end of his current deal—which expires at the end of the season.

Per Cutts, an Arsenal source explained why Wilshere moved to the Cherries for the year:

Jack left because he wanted to get more first-team football to get his England spot back.

He loves Arsenal and wants to remain and the club and the chats he has had with the club have been very positive on both sides.

Jack is desperate to stay and prove himself to everyone what a top-class player he is. The experience about Bournemouth should serve him well.

"

Upon his move to the Vitality Stadium, it was suggested that Wilshere saw "his long-term future as being away from the club he joined as a nine-year-old," per David Woods in the Daily Star.

He has been plagued by injury during much of his career and made just one start for Arsenal in the Premier League during the 2015-16 campaign, per WhoScored.com.

As a result, Wilshere has dropped down the pecking order at the Emirates, as Arsenal's squad now includes a number of players who can operate in his preferred central-midfield role—Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin.

However, if he remains fit, he will likely have the opportunities at Bournemouth to prove that he still has the talent to make good on the potential he showed as a youngster.

If he can have a consistent run in the side under Cherries manager Eddie Howe, Wilshere can show that he deserves a new contract with the Gunners.

Despite having been on the scene for some time—he made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in 2008—he is still a relatively young player and could have almost a decade left in his career.

If he fulfils his immense potential, Arsenal would be well-served by keeping him at the club.

However, if he endures another injury-troubled campaign in 2016-17, it would be unsurprising if Arsenal did not extend his contract and let him leave the club.

The north London outfit have put great faith in him for the best part of the last decade, but they could be forgiven for releasing him at the end of 2016-17 unless he can prove his fitness and talent at Bournemouth.
