Williams Hunting for More History
Breaking new ground in the game is nothing new for top seed Williams, who is the clear favourite for glory at this year’s tournament. However, she became the outright recordholder for the most Grand Slam wins with her victory over Johanna Larsson.
As we can see here, courtesy of BigSport, the win put the 22-Grand Slam winner ahead of some illustrious company:
"Most Grand Slam Wins:
— BigSport (@BigSportGB) September 3, 2016"
307 - Serena Williams
306 - Martina Navratilova
299 - Chrissie Evert
278 - Steffi Graf#GOAT pic.twitter.com/h9wCqzZpIv
Although this achievement is testament to Williams’ longevity and consistency in the women’s game, getting titles has always been her modus operandi, and that’ll be her focus as she takes the court against Shvedova.
For the Kazakh, who ranks 52nd in the world, it’s an ominous challenge. While she’s done superbly to make it to this point in the competition, Williams is playing as well as she has all year, and should she bring the same intensity to the court that was on show against Larsson, it’s tough to see any outcome other than another emphatic win.

In the men’s draw, Murray has been just as dominant and is well on course for his fourth Grand Slam.
The last match was a test for the Scotsman, as Paolo Lorenzi was able to take a set off the 2012 champion. However, he recovered well, established a foothold and eventually coasted into the last 16. As we can see here, courtesy of Bet365, Murray has been in irresistible form in the big tournaments lately:
Even so, the second seed highlighted some areas in which he feels he can improve.
“I was trying to get cheap points, I was going for too much,” he said after beating Lorenzi, per BBC Sport. "When I slowed things down and waited for the right shot to go for, my unforced errors went down, the winners went up and the scoreboard started working in my favour.”
Murray’s compatriot Dan Evans was close to joining him in the last 16, but his opponent, Wawrinka, eventually emerged victorious in a five-set thriller.

The Swiss won the last two sets to get over the line in that one, and while he was far from his best, he'll be glad to have kept his tournament place intact. He’ll be hoping for a much easier outing against Romania’s Illya Marchenko on Monday.
In what could be the most entertaining match of the day, former champion and wild-card entry del Potro faces rising star Dominic Thiem. As noted by USA Today’s Nick McCarvel, for the former, a run like this in a Grand Slam is well overdue after recent injury issues:
Elsewhere, Radwanska will want to prove she has what it takes to challenge Williams’ dominance and will be confident of doing a professional job on Ana Konjuh. The 27-year-old is still on the hunt for her maiden Grand Slam triumph and will be seeking to make it beyond Round 4 at Flushing Meadows for the first time ever.
Simona Halep will want to show her championship credentials on Monday too, with 11th seed Carla Suarez Navarro a potentially tricky opponent.
