Arsenal Transfer News: Ian Wright Hails Gunners Transfer Business, Top Rumours

Rob BlanchetteSep 3, 2016

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has given his seal of approval to Arsene Wenger's summer transfer window signings as the Gunners attempt to win the Premier League.

The north London icon told the Sun Goals podcast (h/t James Walters of the Daily Star) he believes the additions of defender Shkodran Mustafi and striker Lucas Perez for a combined total of £52 million represent excellent business for the Emirates Stadium club.

Wright declared both players could develop into excellent operators in the Premier League:

How can you call them panic buys?

We haven’t seen them play or do anything.

If they come in and hit the ground running, they’re majestic buys.

If they don’t do anything, then you can say that. People are saying it’s panic buys before they even see them play.

Mustafi returns to England with a burgeoning reputation after a two-year period in LaLiga, and he started 30 games in the Primera Division last term, according to WhoScored.com.

The Germany defender has also developed into an important member of the national squad and will provide Wenger with essential depth in front of goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Lucas arrived late in the window from Depor after claiming 17 goals and eight assists in the Spanish top flight last season, per WhoScored.com. The 27-year-old can play as a classic No. 9 but also has the fluidity to thrive alongside Arsenal's wealth of flair midfielders.

Football writer and Arsenal fan James McNicholas, writing for ESPN FC, said he believes the Gunners rescued their window with the signings:

"

Ultimately, Arsenal filled every position they needed to. They began the summer looking to improve right through the spine of the side, and managed to add a centre-half, holding midfielder and centre-forward.

The defender and midfielder look to be particularly strong additions. Shkodran Mustafi is a German international with experience in both Serie A and La Liga, yet at 24 still has room to improve. With Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista both sidelined through injury, adding a centre-back was imperative, and the Gunners have responded by bringing in the most expensive defender in the club's history.

The arrival of Perez has put the future of Olivier Giroud in doubt, but the France international is not concerned Wenger has purchased another centre-forward.

Joe Short of the Daily Express quoted Giroud recently speaking about his immediate future and the risk to his starting berth: “My club situation? I’m not worried, I came back very late from the Euros. It was normal to throw me in gradually. There is no problem on that side.”

Arsenal were desperate to add a top striker, and for many supporters, Perez is not the player they would have picked. However, he is highly regarded in Spain and ready for a bigger challenge in his career.

Here is footage of the striker in action:

As Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea added superstar talents from across the globe this summer, Wenger once again took a prudent approach during the transfer window.

Lucas is a good signing in terms of his statistics and goal threat, but he does not come close to the strikers on show at the other big clubs in England.

Mustafi could develop into a long-term success at Arsenal, but the overall quality of the back four still appears to be wanting, especially when the substitutes' bench is reviewed.

Wenger needed to add a broad spread of players to his squad after last year's lacklustre effort, but once again, Arsenal fans will have to hope the lack of competition in the starting XI doesn't hold the club back—as it appears to do each campaign.
