Arsenal Transfer News: Mesut Ozil Boost Reported After Shkodran Mustafi Move

Christopher SimpsonSep 2, 2016

Arsenal are reportedly "convinced" that their capture of Shkodran Mustafi will prove significant in getting Mesut Ozil to sign a new deal at the club.

According to the Mirror's John Cross, the Gunners are hoping Ozil will put pen to paper on a new contract at the Emirates Stadium.

By recruiting Mustafi for over £35 million—not to mention Granit Xhaka, Lucas Perez, Rob Harding and Takuma Asano at a total summer spend of close to £100 million—they believe they have shown him the ambition he wants to see before extending his stay beyond the two years remaining on his deal.

Further, the defender is Ozil's compatriot, team-mate with the German national side and friend. He welcomed Mustafi to the club via Twitter, seemingly after playing an important role in convincing the 24-year-old to sign for them:

Arsenal are set to resume negotiations after their previous talks had stalled, and Ozil's new contract could be worth around £200,000 per week.

Per football journalist Ben Fairthorne, Ozil has in fact already agreed a deal:

The playmaker is perhaps the Gunners' most important player—at the very least he's their most creative.

Last year, he accrued eight goals and a stunning 20 assists in all competitions, and as Arsenal stat account Orbinho revealed, he was unrivalled across Europe's major leagues in forging opportunities for his team-mates:

He has kicked off this season in strong form, scoring in his first start to help Arsenal claim their first win of the campaign and netting for Germany in their 2-0 win over Finland on Wednesday.

Friday, September 2, marked three years since the 27-year-old joined the club, per Metro Sport:

If Arsenal are to return to their days of making serious Premier League title challenges each year, Ozil is exactly the kind of player they need to keep at the club—a world-class talent who regularly makes match-winning contributions.

While their summer transfer activity did not match the likes of Manchester United in terms of bringing in marquee talent such as Paul Pogba or Zlatan Ibrahimovic, their spending did show greater ambition than they've typically displayed in the transfer market of late.

Arsenal must now translate that into success on the pitch—a player of Ozil's quality rarely settles for the occasional FA Cup while failing to make a significant splash in the league or the UEFA Champions League.
