Sergio Aguero Given 3-Match Ban for Winston Reid Elbow: Latest Details, Reaction

Christopher SimpsonSep 2, 2016

Sergio Aguero will miss the Manchester derby after picking up a three-match ban on Friday for violent conduct, after he appeared to elbow Winston Reid in Manchester City's 3-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday.

The FA confirmed it suspended the striker retroactively for the incident, which referee Andre Marriner missed at the time:

Per the Daily Mirror's David McDonnell, the FA released a statement in which they confirmed City did not agree with the charge or punishment:

"

The Manchester City forward was involved in a 76 minute incident with West Ham United’s Winston Reid on Sunday [28 August 2016], which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

The club denied the charge and submitted further that if it was to be found proven, the standard punishment would be clearly excessive.

On finding the charge proven at a hearing today [Friday 2 September 2016], an Independent Regulatory Commission went on to reject the club’s further claim to decrease the three-match ban.

"

Aguero will now miss the Premier League showpiece with Manchester United at Old Trafford on September 10, Bournemouth's visit to the Etihad Stadium the following week and a trip to Swansea City in the EFL Cup.

The Argentinian had enjoyed an outstanding start to the season with six goals in City's first three games in all competitions prior to the incident with Reid, which left the Hammers defender requiring treatment and subsequently saw him substituted.

Per ESPN FC's Jonathan Smith, Irons captain Mark Noble revealed the New Zealander struggled to speak afterward: "I don't know what it was about really, but I know he can't really talk. He said he got something to the throat."

The incident proved divisive, with Mark Ogden of the Independent and former Manchester City star Trevor Sinclair among those who believed it did not warrant serious punishment:

Meanwhile, football writer Liam Canning and the Times' Oliver Kay believed a ban to be the right course of action:

For manager Pep Guardiola, to be without his most potent attacking player is far from ideal as he looks to gain an early advantage in the title race over United—and earn bragging rights over counterpart and old rival Jose Mourinho.

In Aguero's place, Kelechi Iheanacho could get the nod, or summer signing Leroy Sane may be set to make his debut, which would likely see Nolito move into Aguero's central position.

City are still capable of threatening United going forward, but the danger they'll pose is undoubtedly lessened.
