Fantasy Football Week 2: Tuesday's Daily Fantasy Market Report

Richard JanvrinSep 13, 2016

Week 1 of the 2016 fantasy football season certainly did not disappoint—there were plenty of high-scoring games.

However, there were plenty of injuries that will sideline some big-name players for a few weeks, and some are even season-ending.

You have to feel for these guys—they work tirelessly and put in a ton of work. To see it all essentially come crashing down with a devastating injury has to be extremely disheartening.

On the bright side, hopefully some of the tips in this slideshow will help discover some replacements at lower price tags in DFS in Week 2.

Let's start with the backfield in Kansas City.

Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles May Not Play Week 2

1 of 10

According to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is unsure if running back Jamaal Charles will play in Week 2.

In Charles' absence Week 1, fellow running back Spencer Ware lit up the San Diego Chargers, collecting nearly 200 yards of total offense.

As long as Ware keeps playing this way, not only is he a weekly DFS commodity, but the Chiefs may be in no rush to get Charles back on the field.

Although his price will increase, throw Ware out there against the Houston Texans in Week 2.

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson to Miss Week 2?

2 of 10

In the team's season opener, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson suffered a gnarly ankle injury when Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh stepped on it as he was falling to the ground.

This was shockingly not the intention by Suh.

Wilson did not leave the game, but the game plan changed dramatically as Wilson's rushing ability was essentially nonexistent thereafter.

According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that the injury is "nothing very serious." However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported earlier Monday morning that the injury is casting doubt on Wilson's Week 2 availability.

In Week 2, the Seahawks will take on the Los Angeles Rams. In eight career games against the Rams, Wilson has averaged just 226 passing yards and a shade over one touchdown pass.

If Wilson misses the game, this will impact all receiving options, including wide receivers Tyler Lockett and Doug Baldwin.

However, the Rams were pathetic in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, so who knows?

Fellow quarterback Trevone Boykin will get the start if Wilson is unable to go.

Browns QB Robert Griffin III Placed on Injured Reserve

3 of 10

Man, can this guy catch a break?

According to Rapoport, the Cleveland Browns are placing quarterback Robert Griffin III on injured reserve after tests concluded that the 26-year-old fractured a bone in his shoulder.

This is a huge bummer—we were all secretly hoping for an RG3 resurgence.

It appears that will be on hold for a little while.

With this, fellow quarterback Josh McCown will take over as the team's starting quarterback.

Over his seven full starts in 2015, McCown averaged 293 passing yards per game and assisted in the stardom of tight end Gary Barnidge. And, yeah, those numbers were without wide receivers Josh Gordon and Corey Coleman.

In Week 2, the Browns will take on the Baltimore Ravens—a team McCown lit up for 457 yards in Week 5 last season.

McCown makes for a nice, low-cost DFS option heading into the weekend.

Seahawks RB Thomas Rawls Ready for More Work

4 of 10

After being out-carried by fellow Seahawks running back Christine Michael in Week 1, running back Thomas Rawls is ready to handle more work, according to Liz Mathews of 710 ESPN Seattle.

In season-long leagues, if you drafted Rawls in the earlier rounds, you're encouraged by this news.

For DFS players, the reports of Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson perhaps missing Week 2 could result in the team turning to the running game with the young, raw rookie quarterback Trevone Boykin potentially behind center.

Whether Wilson plays or not may make no difference, as the Los Angeles Rams defense looked abysmal against the 49ers for most of the game in Week 1.

It is unlikely Rawls will be widely owned.

Jaguars RB Chris Ivory Still Hospitalized

5 of 10

Perhaps one of the scarier reports earlier Sunday morning, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Ivory was hospitalized for an unknown medical reason, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Schefter also reported that the newly signed Jaguar is "in pain."

This is of course bigger than DFS, but as a result, fellow running back T.J. Yeldon saw 21 carries in Week 1, averaging 1.9 yards per carry.

It is unknown when Ivory will play again, so Yeldon is worth rostering against a Chargers defense that was absolutely decimated by Chiefs running back Spencer Ware in Week 1.

Sending good vibes to Ivory.

Eagles TE Zach Ertz out a Couple of Weeks?

6 of 10

According to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz is week-to-week with a rib displacement.

The good news here is that there are no broken bones.

After ending 2015 on a high note, Ertz was an intriguing tight end option heading into 2016. It appears as though we'll need to wait for his breakout just a bit longer.

Behind Ertz are fellow tight ends Brent Celek and Trey Burton.

Neither is worth a look in DFS.

Chargers WR Keenan Allen Injured; Done for the Season

7 of 10

This was so sad.

According to Alex Marvez of Sporting News, Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen is out for the 2016 season after tearing his ACL against the Chiefs in the team's opener.

Before this season, Allen had played in 15, 14 and eight games in 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Before his lacerated spleen injury that left him sidelined the last half of the 2015 season, Allen had accumulated 89 targets.

As a result, the upside for Allen was through the roof—imagine his production in 16 games.

Fellow wide receiver Travis Benjamin figures to assume the No. 1 wide receiver role.

The Chargers could look to the free-agent pool to bring in another wide receiver—for example, former New England Patriots wide receiver Aaron Dobson.

This injury elevates the value of Benjamin and tight end Antonio Gates in DFS, but it greatly diminishes quarterback Philip Rivers moving forward.

You have to feel for Allen. Let's hope 2017 is better.

Ravens TE Dennis Pitta Back to No. 1 Role?

8 of 10

Much like the Ravens backfield, the tight end position was up in the air.

Until now?

After tight end Benjamin Watson went down in the preseason, the Ravens had plenty of depth behind him, but fantasy owners were not entirely sure who would assume the lead role.

Looking at Week 1's numbers, it appears to be Dennis Pitta—a guy who has had trouble staying on the field over the years.

Pitta played in more snaps (50) than fellow tight ends Maxx Williams and Crockett Gillmore combined (39).

Moving forward, Pitta is only worth a long-shot, contrarian play in DFS. You cannot depend on him.

Bills WR Sammy Watkins to Be Shut Down?

9 of 10

This has gotten a little strange over the last 24 hours or so.

Earlier Monday morning, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins could be shut down for an extended period of time to nurse his surgically repaired foot from this offseason.

Not so fast, though.

Rapoport reported later Monday that the team has no plans to shut down Watkins. From there, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reported that Watkins said his foot is fine.

Fantasy owners were on a roller-coaster ride Monday morning, but not anymore.

Watkins will face off against the New York Jets and cornerback Darrelle Revis on Thursday Night Football.

Remember: Revis just gave up 12 receptions for 180 yards and a score to Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green.

Don't worry about this matchup.

Jaguars TE Julius Thomas Injures Ankle

10 of 10

After reports of the 28-year-old to be heavily involved in the offense this season, Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Julius Thomas suffered a sprained ankle in the team's Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers, according to John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site.

While the injury didn't make Thomas leave the game, the former basketball star has a history of ankle injuries, thus making this injury potentially concerning.

Thomas makes for a decent Week 2 DFS play against the Chargers if he suits up.

He finished his season debut with five receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.
