Cowboys Unlikely to Sign Davis
Thursday, Sept. 1
David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reported that Davis visited the Dallas Cowboys' facility on Wednesday, though no workout had been scheduled. According to Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys coaches see Davis as a potential backup for rookie Dak Prescott.
However, ESPN's Todd Archer reported on Thursday that it does not sound like Davis will sign with the Cowboys, though "things could change obviously."
The Cowboys are in desperate need of experienced NFL quarterbacks after Tony Romo suffered a back injury that will keep him out for six to 10 weeks, per Pro Football Talk.
Dallas has reportedly named Prescott the starter for Week 1 against the New York Giants after a stellar preseason, per SportsCenter:
Behind him, the Cowboys' options are limited. With both Romo and Kellen Moore sidelined with long-term injuries, the team's only backup is Jameill Showers, who has never played in a regular-season game.
Davis Brings Starter Experience to Next Team
As a member of the St. Louis Rams in 2014, Davis appeared in 10 games and started eight of them after Sam Bradford went down with a season-ending ACL injury. He went 3-5, throwing for 2,001 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Last season with the Browns, Davis competed with Johnny Manziel for starting time while Josh McCown dealt with a number of injuries, but he was only able to start two games.
Although he lost both of them, he did show he was able to make big throws when needed, via the NFL:
But in a limited career that hasn't seen much success, Davis might have to rely on the desperation of teams looking for quarterback depth to catch on elsewhere in the NFL.
