Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor: SummerSlam Results and What's Next for Each Star

Aaron BowerAug 22, 2016

WWE has its inaugural universal champion following Finn Balor's victory at SummerSlam on Sunday night, but what's next for both the champion and his vanquished challenger, Seth Rollins?

The obvious answer would be a rematch at the next pay-per-view, but with an exciting Raw roster and plenty of realistic challengers for Balor, it may not be as straightforward as that.

Here's what could be in store for both men heading out of SummerSlam.

Finn Balor

The champion will almost certainly address the Raw audience tonight, giving everyone a clearer idea of what is going to happen next.

But the easiest thing to predict is that rather than taking on a fresh contender, Balor will go around again with Rollins.

Raw doesn't go to pay-per-view again until the end of next month, when the Clash of Champions show takes place. That gives WWE Creative a four-week window to build up a new rivalry, which certainly lends more weight to the prospect of a new challenger for the Irishman.

But who will it be?

Looking at the top heels on Raw, it would be fantastic to see someone like Kevin Owens make the step up—but he is currently teaming with Chris Jericho, so it's highly unlikely in the short term that KO will get a shot.

The same can be said about Jericho, and when you examine Raw's other top heels, there's not really anyone available who can roll with Balor right now. So from Finn's point of view, his only realistic option is another match with Rollins.

But what about Rollins? Does he have any clearer options?

Seth Rollins

Rollins does have a couple more options readily available to him than Balor, but again, his best opportunity looks to be a rematch with the WWE Universal Championship winner from Sunday night.

He could work a program with someone who doesn't really have any clear plans, but can the likes of Sami Zayn and Neville really step up to Rollins' level right now?

The obvious answer is no, so Rollins vs. Balor II makes complete sense for Clash of Champions.

It'll be intriguging to see how WWE plays the rest of the feud out, though. With Balor winning cleanly on Sunday night, it created little controversy to further spin out the rivalry. Another clean win for Balor, making it two in a row, would completely kill the rivalry and stop it dead in its tracks.

Rollins winning the title just over a month after Balor's victory is also of little value to Balor's instant push, which means WWE's only option is to throw in some controversy.

Will Balor turn heel, aligning with The Club and potentially turning Rollins face? Will Rollins earn a win via disqualification?

These are all questions that will be answered at Clash of Champions itself, but in terms of what's next for Rollins, it seems fairly certain that he and Balor are far from done with each other.
